Making eye contact and cracking a grin

The creak of the chair when you swivel it to the side and roll it across the room

The moment when you open the door and feel the difference around you

The real air

It pours into you and the realization hits you that

You can breathe

You can feel

You can taste what feels like fresh grass shavings on the tip of your tongue though you know it can’t be possible

The happy medium between falling asleep and thinking where you look back upon

Your day

Your week

Your year so far

Your life as it is

And wonder how much more there is to go

And who you’ll spend it with

And what you’ll feel in the meantime

What you’ll manage to experience

But then you realize

What matters truly now

Is that your eyes are gradually closing and you can’t help it 

And maybe you don’t dream but at least you wake up again 

To watch another lingering sunset

It’s truly a sufficient standard

And a comforting constant
