I would like to point us towards a future in which we are not caught up in the fishnet that covers the skin / (not like coffins but like stockings) / and a future in which we are not covered in iridescent scales / (not like fish but like prisms).
It begins again in the dark, as most things do. / It begins with the absence of a thing, / and the lacking of a thing. It begins / and it begins and it begins and it begins / again.
I hear your voice in my head: a song / so familiar and so new all at once, like / a child coming home. like me being here. / come in, come in. the water’s warm.
You look over at me looking at you / looking at me. / Do you see heaven in my eyes? / I see heaven in yours. / It looks like a monster.
That’s what loving you feels like. / Like I am hoping for a miracle, / gifted to me by a devil at a crossroads.
There is a desire in my body that terrifies me. / It beats warm and human like a heartbeat or / like feet pounding against pavement or / like wings beating against the sunless sky.
I want to live forever, I want all the gold in the world, / I want your hand in mine, your heart on my tongue.
The desire in my body scares me / but my limits scare me even more.
I must kiss you again and again. / I must remember. Savor.
Remembering me, remembering us: / back when we were young. / I loved you then. I loved you there. / I love you still.
This is how the ocean pushes and pulls; / how the sun rises and falls; how the winter dies and the spring begins to warm: / this is how he asks and this is how you give.
I see all these little lights—like raindrops / on the glass surface that is the sky. / Like heaven on a windshield.
I am in transit at the moment. / Twenty two years old on my way home. / Plush seat. Speeding past the trees like / there is nothing to see: not here, not by me. / I am a girl who has seen it all.
We are less than two and more than one. / I would say infinite but I would be lying, / so instead I will say that we are the sound / of a song that has been sung for a hundred years.
I am lonely. / I am dreaming of you. / I drift out to sea even as you call my name / from where you stand on the shore.
