Spiny River Snail (Io fluvialis)

...a species of endangered pleurocerid snail that is endemic to the Tennessee River and its tributaries in North America. I. fluvialis typically inhabits rapidly flowing, well-oxygenated waters of shoals and riffles or rivers. Where it will feed on the algal coatings of rocks.

Currently Io fluvialis is listed as endangered and is threatened by pollution and dam constriction. Which is causing it to be extirpated from a good bit of its native range.

Also this species is the emblem of the American Malacological Society
