Although still in process this was the first attempt at pulling and dragging the Yucca brush. The Yucca plants flowers are the national Flower of El Salvador.
I have been in the United States practically all my life but the constant feeling of yearning for my birth country, El Salvador, haunts me.

I have been collecting used calling cards directly from my parents as well as found on the street. I collect them because it saddens me to see them get thrown away or discarded. I think of the countless conversations of love, remembering, money, death and much more had through these cards.
The calling cards with their numerical codes become artifacts for my personal museum of late 20th and early 21st century immigration.

These two painting are based on two photographs taken of me the day my mother and sister left to the United States. I became interested in the sadness of the photographs. In both photos I am alone and holding a plastic pink panther toy.

These photos are part of the My Two Homes project that artist Alexander Hernandez and I have been working on this past school year with Mission Education Center youth which is a K-5 elementary school for newly arrived Spanish-speaking immigrant students. Alexander Hernandez and I received LTAF studio residency at Root Division and with in this fellowship we developed a series of projects that are meant to spark friendships and create bonds between children in their new home in the city of San Francisco as well as give students a space to freely reflect, remember and hold on to their birth country in their memory. The work will be on display at New Growth: Coming Up Color art exhibit at Root Division May 11th 2013
