Just how much is Peter Hastings hiding...?

Hello, fellow Rosewood Residents! Gavin here. 

Just when we thought we could safely and unanimously present the “Most Dysfunctional Family in All of Pennsylvania” award to the DiLaurentis clan, The House of Hastings, never to be outdone, swept in from left field and reminded us all that they don’t take kindly to being 2nd best at anything. Remember when we thought our biggest familial problem was Pam Fields struggling for a whopping 3 episodes with Emily’s sexuality (made even funnier when flashing forward to Season 7 and her making plans to mingle with bougie local lesbians over cucumber sandwiches)? Ahh. Those were simpler times.

This has caused Kate and myself to pick over everything potentially loaded, mysterious, or sketchy that the Hastings have done with a fine-toothed comb (although let’s be real, we’ll be lucky if we finish a task that size by next year, let alone over the next 9 weeks..) But ever-inspired by the amazing theorists we’ve encountered, we’re going to try our best to raise some points that are now striking us as especially odd, and maybe generate some solid leads.

Earlier today at work I was watching 5x01 on my phone (I’m expecting my “Employee of the Year” award in the mail any day now), and an exchange between Melissa (who I’ve never quite trusted since she not only stole Aria’s fro-yo, but also had the audacity to talk with her mouth full while eating it… am I maybe a little too passionate about ice cream?) and Peter (whose fertility prowess apparently gives Miracle Gro a run for its money), that damn-near haunted me in a way that never particularly hit me before. 

To summarize, in the Season 4 finale, Melissa ostensibly confesses to Peter, in a whisper, that she’s the one who pushed a body she thought was Ali’s into a grave. Season 5 opens with just the two of them knowing this information. There’s a scene near the beginning of the episode where Melissa almost confesses this to Veronica, which causes Peter, who has been sipping a drink in the background, to look alarmed for the first time all scene. Before Melissa can say anything, Detective Holbrook arrives, and Melissa loses her chance. 

If you want to follow along, this next scene happens in Season 5, Episode 1, at around the 15-minute mark:

(In true Hastings family fashion, Peter startles Melissa by waiting up for her in absolute darkness, drink in hand) Melissa: I can’t keep this a secret anymore. I want to tell Holbrook the truth. When Spencer finds out, she’ll have a reason to come home. (Peter finishes his drink and rises from the table, stepping toward Melissa in such a menacing way that Melissa looks frightened and steps backward. He reaches behind her, once again causing her to cower away, and grabs the rest of his liquor bottle) Peter: Your mother… can never know what you told me. (Peter exits. End scene)

Notice how Peter says nothing about Holbrook/the police finding out, despite Melissa directly mentioning it a moment ago. It’s Veronica that can never find out.

WHY? This is suddenly seeming so strange and much more “loaded” to me, especially if you watch the scene and really see his creepy, near-threatening, intensity. At the time, I think I/we just wrote it off as, “He doesn’t want Veronica to be hurt by the truth”, and maybe that really is all it is. But the more we learn about Peter, the less I believe he’s ever had Veronica’s best interest in mind (hi, Jason and Spencer!), and it seemed to ring more of wanting to control the information rather than anyone being hurt by it.

Does this mean that…

1. Peter thought/knew more about Bethany Young (or even who we think is Bethany Young… I know they said dental records were used to confirm her, but the Rosewood Police has seen bigger fuck-ups and corruption) than he lead on?

2. We just assumed that what Melissa told Peter was that she buried Bethany, but really, it was something more or different?

I don’t know if either of these is true, or if Miracle Gro Hastings is just being his usual, foreboding self. But now that we have reason to believe that the Hastings/Drake/DiLaurentis clan has been more entangled in all of this than we realized, I’d really be interested to know just how much Peter knows and is hiding, and if anyone else found or finds this scene as strange as we do!
