I signed up to pick up litter as a volunteer over a year ago. I received some bin bags, a piece of high visible clothing, a pair of gloves, and a reacher. And then I didn't do it for a long time.
I was depressed at the time, but I went on walks sometimes, so I figured I might as well make the environment where I was stretching my legs a little prettier.
I don't know what stopped me. How convoluted the process was, maybe. You had to use an app, which followed where you went litter picking, and then leave the bag somewhere and report it so municipal workers could come and pick it up.
But today I finally did it. I notified my start on the app (and only remembered to switch on my mobile data about half an hour later, but it had thankfully kept track of my route anyway). It took me more than an hour and a full Buffering the Vampire Slayer episode to make it down my street and back, which is less than a kilometre in total.
I had always thought I would do it by the river, where I like to go for a walk, but it makes more sense to do my own street at first. I managed to fill half a bin bag. Empty drink cans, plastic bags, so many Capri-Sun juice pouches, I think part of the plastic protection for a bicycle chain? An enormous amount of cigarette ends, of course. Some pieces of paper.
I hadn't really thought I'd fill enough of a bag with just my street, but I ended up leaving it at the end of my street, made a picture of where, and reported it.
I wonder how quickly they'll come and pick it up.
It’s fiesta time 🪅

"Eco-anxiety" is a new term that means “chronic fear of environmental doom,” and more than 50 percent of young people have it. Find out how we can we help them.
