Two figures walked silently through a dark hallway. Their path was only lit by a single torch, held up high by one of the men.
Chancellor Raintree muttered under his breath as he marched along the dark, cold hall. Wax dripped from the candle and onto the holder as he went, and his velvet slippers scrapped against the floor as he marched.
“I knew this would only end poorly. I knew it! I tried to tell the King it shall, I tried! His Father would have listened to me! He would never have allowed the great Solveig name to become so soft!“
The man who walked just mere steps behind him frowned. He slowed to a stop, and paused to look around. Grandmaster Reeves held his own torch up, “Is it not dangerous to speak in such loose tongues while the walls currently have ears?”
Raintree slowed to a stop as well, and turned around to look at Reeves, “What? Are you speaking of the Giratina? He be’eth in a meeting with the King at the moment...” He paused for a second, and his old, wrinkled eyes locked on the younger man, “...Why? Is there something you wish to day, Grandmaster?”
“Aye.“ Reeves muttered. He lowered his torch, and let the shadows dance across his face. Raintree squinted as Reeves face disappeared into the darkness, but could not make out any details of the Grandmaster’s expression.
Reeves stayed silent for a moment, and then sighed, “...Between you and I, would it honestly be so bad if the Assassin had had his way?” “Watch your tongue!“ Raintree spat, “What you speak is no less than treasonous to the crown!“ “Is it to the Crown though?“ Reeves spat, “Or, is it as you said, and what the King did, against your council, all those years ago the real treason?“
Raintree fell silent, and he too lowered his torch until his own face was cast in shadows, “You were right. It is dangerous to speak of such things while the walls have ears.” He turned away, and started walking again, “Let us make haste.”
“I have waited ten long years, Raintree!“ Reeves snapped, causing the old man to halt once more, “And so have you.“ He gestured in front of him, “And so has everyone who knows the truth! The people have been deceiv-“ “-Enough!“ Raintree cut in, “Speak no more of this. And especially speak of this to no one else. As subjects of the realm, we must obey our King’s wisdom.“ He started walking once more, “With the aid of Giratina, we shall find this Assassin, and then, once the Assassin is dealt with, we shall speak about this with the King, and no more before.“
Reeves did not follow after the old man this time, but stood firmly grounded, and watched the old man shuffle onwards, until the old man disappeared, muttering on into the darkness without him.
Only once the light from Raintree’s torch fully disappeared into the darkness ahead, did Reeves let out a deep sigh, and turned back to walk back the way he had came.
