Also because I don't talk about it nearly enough-
Squad 11 is still my favorite squad even after all these years
Not only because I just really love pretty much everyone in that squad and they were the first squad I really liked and I find their general philosophy of "If you like to fight you're one of us and we protect our own more than we defend the law so if it's between you and The Government we're choosing you" because Kommamura may technically be a werewolf but that right there is wolf pack mentality BUT ALSO because of Yumichika Ayasegawa specifically
I mean think about this for a second, Squad 11 is undoubtedly the most hyper-masculine/stereotypically masculine squad in the entire Gotei, I'm 99.9% sure that Yachiru is the only girl in the entire squad, and yet despite all of their overwelming masculine energy, they don't even QUESTION Yumichika's place within their ranks
Yumichika goes against 95% of Squad 11's general mojo, if it weren't for his love of fighting he wouldn't fit in AT ALL, he even admits that he doesn't tell anyone he has a Bankai because it doesn't fit with the brute-force of the rest of the squad and is worried about what they'll think.....
But THIS is what worries him?
Yumichika is a very flamboyant, pretty, feminine, clean-freak, gay (it may not be confirmed in canon that he's gay but you really can't try to tell me he's straight) who's zanpokto command is "BLOOM" of all things, and yet he has zero reservations about being himself with his squadmates and none of the squad ever bat an eye at him
This is a squad that's generally full of men like Ikkaku and Kenpachi who love to get loud and rowdy and have no real shame when it comes to things like getting dirty or being kind of gross, they're all about fighting and killing, these are the kinds of people who are usually fuckboys and toxicly masculine, but there's none of that going on
Not only do I not recall there being any notable issues with Squad 11's members harassing, insulting, or making crude remarks about women- an accomplishment on it's own when you consider that Bleach isn't exactly running short on perverts and fuckboys and yet the biggest potential for that charectorization was entirely skipped over- but specifically with the relationship Yumichika has with his squadmates and vice versa is really heart-warming and makes me happy
Additionally, I really appreciate that Yumichika can be flamboyant without being a gay stereotype, he can be obsessed with beauty and cleanliness.... but he's also a fighter at heart who genuinely LIKES battle as a sport, he likes violence, he likes blood, he doesn't like getting blood on his clothes or his face but he's otherwise pretty brutal
Bleach is one of those Classic Shounen Anime with Classic Shounen Stereotypes and ofcourse there's going to be a flamboyant but not explicitly labeled gay running around (I don't remember if there are any others or not but *shrug* ) but instead of taking that trope and following the letter of the stereotype by casting him as being squeamish around blood, hating violence, and being in a less masculine squad- and a less prominent one at that- like squad four, squad two, or.... honestly ANY other squad as none of the others are so testosterone filled by qualification alone, Kubo chose to put him in the Soul Reaper equivalent of the football team and have him ENJOY it and be well liked by his peers and generally be happy there and I just think it's nice
