Double Trouble | Roxy & Lucas
Roxy’s emotions had been all over the place lately, especially after finding Rufus’ letter in the box she kept of his things. She thought she’d been through everything, so finding it tucked away in one of his otherwise empty notebooks was a surprise. At first she wished she hadn’t seen it, because it made her feel even more upset than usual, but after reading through it a few times she realised it was actually a good thing. And after talking to her friends about it, she felt even more comforted and it even seemed to give her a more positive outlook on life.
Today was the day of her first scan and Roxy was actually feeling pretty excited. It was the first time she’d be able to actually get a glimpse of their baby and, even though she was still sad that Rufus wouldn’t be able to go with her, Lucas was coming and that made her feel happier about it. She arrived at the hospital right on time and signed herself in. She was a bit worried that the midwife would be the same as she’d had last time - she didn’t want to be faced with the embarrassment of being recognised, because a 17-year-old being pregnant twice in less than two years was just asking to be called a slut. But, luckily, the nurse was someone Roxy hadn’t met before so she smiled with relief. When she saw Lucas she walked over and hugged him, suddenly feeling very nervous. This was how she’d felt the first time she was pregnant, but this time it felt completely new again. As she walked into the room and lay down on the bed, the nurse set up the machinery and smiled. “Is this the dad?” she asked, and Roxy shook her head quickly. “No… He’s ma best mate.” She smiled and looked up at Lucas, reaching over and holding his hand. She was shaking a bit but she tried not to think too much as the nurse applied the cold gel to her belly and used the scanner.
The image of the baby appeared on the screen, and Roxy looked up and smiled. Everything looked normal. She’d had the normal ‘mum’ worries, that something would be wrong, but everything was fine. Though the nurse did look a bit confused, like she was trying to figure something out. “Is everythin’ alright?” Roxy asked, her smile fading slightly. “Everything’s fine, love,” the nurse replied with a smile. “Don’t worry. But… Well, look for yourself.” The woman pointed at the screen. “There’s two babies there, darling. See? You’re having twins.” Roxy’s jaw dropped. She stared at the screen, wondering how she hadn’t noticed it before. She’d thought of all the possible outcomes of this scan, but somehow not this one. “Whoa,” was all she could say.
