Remove the old shower head
The first step in this shower head replacement project assumes that you know how to remove a shower head. To remove the old head, all you need to do is turn it counterclockwise a few times to see if you can remove it by hand.
Clean the shower arm thoroughly
Since there is likely rust, lime and other debris left behind from your old shower head, use the rag to clean the arm inside and out. Not only will this clear the way for better pressure and cleaner shower water, but it will also make it easier to install your new shower head.
Wrap the shower arm with shower head tape
Locate the linear grooves, also called threads, at the end of the shower arm and place Teflon tape clockwise over them two or three times. With each pass, press the shower head tape firmly into the threads with your fingers so that you can see them through the tape.
Install the replacement showerhead
The steps involved in installing a shower head depend on the type of replacement shower head you choose. While a standard wall-mount showerhead is easy to install and replace, other types may require more work and professional installation. Below is an overview of how to install a showerhead for each type:
Standard wall mount. Wall-mounted shower heads are usually the least expensive and easiest to install, and can usually be attached by hand. Simply place the new head on the shower arm and turn it clockwise until it is firmly seated.
Top Mount. If you are replacing a top-mounted shower head with the same type, you can place it on the shower arm by hand. If you are installing such a head for the first time and have no experience with plumbing, you should ask a professional for help.
Hand shower. There are hand showers that can replace tub faucets and others that can replace an existing shower head. Usually, they are fairly easy to install. Connect the new shower head clockwise to the end of the shower arm, and then connect the end of the shower hose to the bracket. As always, check to see if the manufacturer provides additional instructions.
Sliding bar. An adjustable bar shower usually has a handheld shower head attached to a 60 cm bar on the wall with a flexible hose. In addition to connecting the shower head to the supply line, the bar must also be installed. As a rule, hollow wall plugs can facilitate this in a shower.
Shower panels or technology-enabled. Additional features and functions can make showering more enjoyable. However, installation becomes more involved with more complicated offerings. With shower panels and technology-enabled shower heads, it's best to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and hire an experienced professional if you don't have experience with plumbing and electrical installations.
