In light of yesterday’s post and the conversations that followed with you all, I spent part of last night looking back through my designs from the five years I’ve been at this. Couldn’t help but share this three year old custom cuff that still takes my breath away. Expect to see more pieces like this soon, because another habit I’m trying to leave behind in the new year is that I hoard all of my favorite, highest quality, and rarest stones, hardly ever using them in pieces. As understandable as this tendency is, pieces like this one would never happen if I kept all of these stones for myself. Here’s to using epic materials in 2018! This is an incredibly rare, Red Plume Agate, found near the town of Brenda in Arizona. The shop I acquired this slice from, is in Cottonwood. I love all the rich reds and golds that are separated by sparkly, druzy-filled micro-cavities. The green “lines” on the edges, are made of thousands of tiny little dots, resembling Moss Agates! And that botryoidal rocky edge on top and bottom is so cool! I really like this piece! All this in under an hour on the John Day river in Clarno on Monday. Similar material to what I find up here in northern Oregon, but the central Oregon stuff is somehow brighter, more diverse, bigger and generally just a bit more spectacular.
