Agate's signature banding forms in volcanic gas bubbles through cyclical silica deposition over thousands of years. Each band represents a different chemical environment — iron creates reds and yellows, manganese produces pinks and purples, while chromium yields greens. The microcrystalline quartz structure makes agate significantly harder than most host rocks, which is why weathered agates often survive as perfect nodules long after their volcanic matrix erodes away. This durability also explains why they take such a brilliant polish.
