the drawing’s done traditionally with multiliners and the drawing i’m working on is a modified oil pastel brush, i just adjusted it to be less blotchy. i need to make cleaner lineart.. i can’t hide behind messy sketchlines forever.

oh, and try thin lines for long strokes and make your curves thick, the usage depends on what you want to achieve but it’s great for getting better contours.

Hey there! I don't think you know me, but I've been following you on DA for many years and I'd like to say that it's an absolute delight to finally find you again on tumblr after all this time. I had to go through some of your past posts to catch up a bit... May I ask where you are working at the moment? HELLO. oh man, thank you for going through my dumb personal posts, i’ve left DA so long because tumblr is a slightly better alternative for daily posts because i don’t get to draw often anymore.

last year i decided to man up and went to do freelance work for indie games so i could build my concept art portfolio to get into a proper game company. i was also freelancing at my ex-lecturer’s lab office revamping websites and instruction manuals. i interviewed at Streamline Studios and got the job, i was so fucking happy because that company drew for my favourite games like Bioshock. they push for their own IP too, so it’s pretty motivational. i’ve been working at Streamline for 2+ months now and its work processes are really different from what i’m used to, i’m ok with it now.

each day we have a meeting to catch up and update each other on what we should develop for assets in the game. stuff like the design language of a certain area, props, how things work etc. i have to draw 6-12 thumbnails for the clients to choose and i get feedback from my bosses. clients will give feedback as well so i can refine the idea and work on colour concepts. after colours are approved, i do a proper hi-res render of the asset. sometimes i just have to draw out concepts for an item so the 3D modelers have a base to model/mesh out. using google sketchup is a huge plus when it comes to fixing perspectives, that’s why i’m learning to use this program now because my perspectives suck.

what i’ve learned so far is that silhouettes are important and while you can make stuff interesting, you have to know how things work and also show it (via sketches or text). i struggled with this during my first month because i’m so used to bullshitting stuff with colour and aesthetics, that’s not how things are done. everything is rendered in grayscale first and later coloured with gradient maps (it’s actually wrong to apply colour in the first stage). i still colour lineart when i’m doing personal work though.
