This episode was more enjoyable than I was expecting. Ash catching Gengar wasn’t that unexpected, so it really boiled down to execution. And all things considered, it was really solid.
That ghostly title card was a nice way to set the episode’s tone. This was an especially “cartoony” episode, with Ash’s “curse” making for some pretty good slapstick. Like things like the shaker spilling, and drinking from a vase were great.
As for Gengar’s backstory, it was absurd in the best way. That whole montage of Gengar waiting year after year was funny, depressing, and completely fitting. Team Rocket’s role was pretty basic, and the rest of the episode was pretty standard fare. Until we get to this line:
“You don’t have to trust me right away. I trust you.”
And this is why Ash Ketchum is such a good trainer.
