sometimes I wonder what it would be like to never accomplish anything significant in my life, but I can’t because I’m not a youtube “ranter”
Rant #5: Bring Me The Horizon- I Like Their New Sound
Alright. Their latest album came out in early april, back in the distant past of 2013.
Bring Me The Horizon, a band I've come to like.
Now, they ARE metalcore [ugh], but they're actually pretty ambient. I have a soft spot for their latest single, 'drown.' It's got an atmospheric sound, almost like Deftones. 'Shadow Moses' was the first song by them that I could take seriously. The opening chant gets your attention, and that first breakdown? One of the few that I actually enjoy. 'Go To Hell, For Heaven's Sake?' A little punny, but a pretty good song nonetheless. Oliver 'Oli' Sykes is a great vocalist, both with cleans and screams, and their drummer, Matt Nicholls, has earned my respect as one of the more talented drummers of metal's 'scene kid' subgenres.
[You can listen to 'drown' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkV5709EG5M]
Anyways, the band has matured musically over the years. I think it started with their album 'i know there's a hell...' yadda yadda yadda. To be honest, that album title runs on almost as long as a Panic! At The Disco or Fall Out Boy song.
Their sound. Again, mature. Their old stuff was deathcore, which some of the critics are still arguing, or HAVE argued, over whether or not it's a legitimate subgenre, and/ or if it's even MUSIC.
I'm with most of 'em. Deathcore is garbage. The lyricism is incomprehensible, there's the typical overuse of bass as in most '-core' subgenres, and there's the presence of my metalhead's pet peeve, DOUBLE BASS KICKS.
If you want more information, check this guy out. His video on deathcore is pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi3qC_zQ4Po
This has started to turn into less of me liking a band and more of me hating what said band used to be. I guess that happens a lot with bands I like. I still like some bands' old stuff over their new stuff, but that also works in reverse for me.
Like P!ATD and FOB. Their old stuff was great. Classic, even. 'New Perspective' and 'Sugar We're Going Down' will forever be held close by my inner pop-punk kid. But P!ATD are going full alternative pop. They might as well work with Fueled By Ramen, that indie youtube channel that produces indie bands that aren't really indie. Like fun..
Oh wait.
P!ATD IS on there. Oh, and so is PARAMORE. Huh. Big surprise.
I'll get to paramore someday, but this is not that day.
