PNDT
MoHFW has not suspended the PC&PNDT Act, which prohibits sex selection before or after conception A section of the media is speculating that the PC&PNDT (Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection)) Act 1994 has been suspended by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Block pre-natal sex determination content, SC directs search engines
Noting that online search engines Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are under an “obligation” to check pre-natal sex determination advertisements, the Supreme Court on Monday directed them to develop in-house methods to prohibit such content.

So today in the second part of the PNDT Workshop we veered a bit off the track of straight dance into more self expression. We shared memories to ourselves, watched each other take blows from an imaginary attacker, and improved our way through, therefore mutating, Troy's gorgeous phrases. At the end we also did an exercise in which we used our names to express various emotions across the floor (and of course Nick had to take it to the next level to have us do it to each other down a line). This is when I started to feel pretty uncomfortable. I hadnt felt like this in a long time. First I realized that the act of using my name deeply personalized what I was doing. I spend so much of my time inhabiting the mind of a character and expressing them, that it's very off-putting and scary to express as myself. Then Patricia said that we could use more than just movement to convay what we want. We could use inaction, words, sounds, anything. That made it even more intimidating. When I was first feeling this in class I though, "maybe I'm embarrassed because I'm not as good a dancer as these other people" or "I'm just nervous about working I'm front of people I admire so much". Well both of those ships already sailed when Nick had to completely reteach me the phrase both days because I couldn't pick it up. So it wasn't that. That's when I realized, I'm not afraid of being wrong, I'm afraid of being myself. I am an actress, I bare a soul on stage, but it's never mine. I think that's the main difference between actors and dancers. Actors are mirrors, they reveal others. Dancers are lights, they reveal themselves. So I think that sums up why I need to dance right now. It's a challenge, not only a physical one, but an artistic and personal one. I feel that becoming a dancer will not only make me more comfortable with myself, but benefit me as a performer, being able to be comfortable being that vunerable.

I’ve mentioned this before on Tumblr, but I love the way that crowdfunding has been gaining traction over the past few years. Barring a lottery win (quite unlikely since I do not play) or a highly advantageous marriage (also unlikely), I will never have the resources to be a patron of the arts in the old style. But I love that I can be a patron in the new style. I can give a little and others can give a little--and together we can help artists create amazing works.
(And just FYI for those of you who enjoy supporting artists who have been involved with Sleep No More--Nick Bruder, Troy Ogilvie, and Erik Abbott-Main have been working on this project.)
Is anyone here planning on going to Replacement Place (Patricia Noworol's dance piece featuring Troy Ogilvie and Nick Bruder)?
