Some more work-in-progress shots from “Bird Stack II” this summer! Here you can see the process of painting the Bullock’s Oriole on the bottom left. I use plastic wrap to protect the areas of the painting I’m not working on at the moment.

Final work in progress shot from the bird stack this summer. To the Wood Duck, I bestow the title of “the most difficult bird I have ever painted”! I’ve painted a LOT of birds, so I’d say that’s a pretty meaningful assessment 😜😉 I swear, not only are their patterns and ornamental feathers unbelievably difficult to understand, every picture of a wood duck looks a little different. For example, in some photos the feet appeared grey, others yellow, others orange, and some were patchy combinations of those colors. Sometimes feathers appeared black, but in other photos they would be purple or green. Never before have I so badly wanted to have a live bird to study. I did my best, and I will announce to all the artists who come after me: when learning to paint birds, do not start with a wood duck! 😂
I haven’t gotten a picture of this guy yet but he visits like once every two weeks and he’s flighty
he’s a sturdy little guy
using this as a place to post my porch birds now
the OG porch bird and the reason I set up the camera and got the feeder and bath.
