I really want to share this video essay of Portrait of a Lady on Fire because it’s so wonderful and brillant. Some of his analysis left me completely in awe ! He also did a great editing work that helps you a lot to visualize all his explanations.
After watching this you’ll love the film even more (yes I swear it’s possible) and will make you realize even more how incredible Céline is as a writer and director.

Holy shit, this essay is BRILLANT !!!! Best video essay I’ve seen about poalof. The editing is also amazing and really helps to visualize everything. It’s truly incredible work!
I particularly loved the part when he talks about Héloïse seeing the first portrait for the first time and being upset because she expected Marianne to know and see her better than that.
And also when he talks about the close up/ wide shot of Marianne and Héloise how it represents the person being in control or being vulnerable.
And also loved the way he talked about Sophie’s role and how Marianne and heloise helping her with the abortion also represents a way for them to fight the system. And if they can’t defeat the system when it comes to both of them and their love, they can help Sophie to win her fight. That was an incredible way of seeing this.
I urge EVERYONE to see that essay. It’s 17 minutes long and it’s totally worth it !! I think I’m gonna repost it because it’s really brillant.
