So You Want to Make a Fiction Podcast?

So this article is by the creator of an audio drama called Lost Terminal. As always, I encourage you to read the article in full!

The article starts by extolling the many virtues of podcasting that I hold dear myself- namely that they’re personal, there are no gatekeepers, no monopolizing companies, and no algorithms shoving stuff down your throat.

Once the idea of a computer that communicates through a text terminal came to the creator’s mind, they sat and thought of what they personally could do to bring that idea to life. And, apologies if the creator does not use they/them pronouns, I couldn’t find their real name or any preferred pronouns written.

The next point the creator brings up is to write stories that you want to hear. Basically, be as self indulgent as you want. When choosing a genre and setting, know that these should complement your likes and fit the story you’re telling.

As you’re having fun writing, the creator advises that you should pay attention to what themes keep resurfacing. Once you see them, lean into them. They’re what really make you write, and if you can tap into them, it makes your story far more cohesive and yourself far more interested in continuing.

The Sound Barrier: Does Cover Art Matter?

I love the look of the dingy, barely functioning logo for PodCube™ as well as the show’s offbeat comedy. I haven’t even been able to give Midnight Disease’s The Star Collector a proper look yet but it sits in my subscriptions feed longer than most because that visual of alien foliage spilling out of a glass enclosure is something I just have to know more about. Super Normal Media’s Who Killed Avril Lavigne? is a triple threat with its title, retro visuals, and an amazing show attached to it all.

This is serious, but does anyone want to help me write/edit a podcast?

Dani drags her best friend, Nic, to a supposedly “haunted” building for the night. Despite protests from Nic, they decide to say the night so Dani can finish her paper in investigative journalism. After a few hours, Dani decides to leave Nic for two minutes and go to the bathroom. After coming back, the door is locked and Nic is screaming for help. Several attempts later, Dani breaks into the room to find Nic missing. 

Searching for her friend, Dani must confront her skepticism as she comes across the weird and paranormal.

It’s still very much a work in progress, but I’m open to help. I’d really like to workshop this and make it something.

Hey, how you doing today? Hope you’re staying safe 💚 I need to say, I love your podcast with all my heart. And I wanted to ask for some advice. I’m really bad at the whole social media thing, I mostly follow people and lurk on their blogs without interacting. But I’m dying for making a podcast. I have many ideas and really want to do it but I don’t know how to get people to know about it. (1/2)

Like I don’t need hundreds of people hearing me, I just want to know that at least one person hears me. Plus, I think I’m gonna do it in Spanish because, well, my accent is there and is kinda thick and I know many people won’t like it. So, I wanted to know if you had any advice. For podcast in general but maybe also about self promotion, or social media, or just how to get people to notice you. In any case, thank you for reading this. You’re awesome 2/2

Awe thank you so very much, love!!!! I fully support you creating your own podcast!! I think doing it in Spanish is a great idea but I don’t want you doing it just because you’re self conscious about your accent. I was SUPER insecure about my voice when I started my podcast, convinced everyone would hate it because it’s annoying and obnoxious but much to my surprise people compliment me on my voice all the time! They tell me it’s cute, sweet, and even SOOTHING! That’s def not something I ever expected to hear! I personally love accents! Listening to people talk who have accents makes my ears very happy! But again, do what makes you comfortable! Not everything has to cater to an English speaking audience. And if you want to get English speakers you can always put your podcast on Youtube and add subtitles! Best of both worlds! 

Self-promoting your work is a struggle let me tell you! Especially if you don’t already have a built in audience. When I started Tea With the Gods I had followers that I could promote to which helped but there are plenty of my own followers who don’t even realize I have a podcast no matter how much I promote it! Unfortunately Tumblr isn’t really the best place to advertise because it easily gets lost in the void of endless posts. That’s why you see me and others reblogging posts multiple times throughout the day and even week. 

If you don’t already have a social media with followers to see what you’re promoting then it’s going to be a bit more difficult and you’re going to have to be patient. Tags will be your best friends so make good use of them! A lot of people have found me by browsing tags! I also recommend creating multiple social media platforms and try to be active on them. People aren’t too keen on following people who just promote things. I’ve had the most success with Tumblr and Instagram so I recommend having at least both of us, but twitter can also be useful if you use it right. I have one but truthfully I can’t stand twitter. It doesn’t vibe well with me. But you may feel different so feel free to try it out for a bit. 

Depending on what your podcast is about you can also look into promoting yourself on Amino. I keep forgetting I have it and should probably use it more. 

I know you said you’re mostly a lurker but self-promoting really relies on you interacting more with the community. You can get a surge of followers and new listeners by one well known person mentioning your podcast. The reason I am where I am now is because those in the community who had a ton of followers shared my posts and I continue to grow because amazing witches, pagans, and Hellenic Polytheists support me and my work. We support one another so don’t be afraid to reach out! Like you’re doing now! When you make this podcast let me know! 

As for creating the actual podcast the best advice I can give you is to not overthink it too much. Just do it. You’ll learn as you go. The important thing is to get episodes uploaded so you actually have something to promote! It’s not going to be perfect but that’s okay! Trust me, listeners aren’t expecting or demanding perfection. Just be you and share your ideas! People will love it!

i really want to start a podcast but i’m kinda running short on ideas. i don’t really know what i should do. is there anything you guys would be interested in?

i had an idea of doing a sort of book club almost, where maybe i get everyone to read a book ( classic or modern ) and then discuss it once a week on my progress, how i’m liking it so far, anything sticking out with plot, etc

or i was thinking of maybe doing a read along? like every episode i’ll read a couple chapters of the book they pick for me to read, and it’ll be like an audiobook sort? i don’t know, let me know if you have any suggestions, please & thank you!

Script Editors Wanted for New Action/Adventure LGBTQ+ Sci-fi Audio Drama

Hello there! Are you a writer or script editor? Do you like podcasts? Do you like gays in space having adventures and saving the day (and being cute as heck while doing it)? Then we need your help!

Meleager’s Four is a podcast in development, produced by @herbariumpodcasts (producers of Eyeris, Jupiter Finch and all the Stars in the Sky, etc.) We’re looking for script editors to help polish up and finalize the six-episode run of the first adventure. There may be more adventures down the line, but for now, it’s just six in the adventure known as “Search for the Missing Leader.” You do not need experience to audition, but we do welcome those who have worked on audio dramas or other literature that is meant to be performed. We especially would like to hear from LGBTQ+ script editors, given that most, if not all, of the characters in this adventure belong to that community.

Hey y'all, I have an idea to create a podcast/audio drama. There are a couple hiccups in accomplishing this. -I don't know what programs I need for that. -How do I politely ask friends/acquaintances to be voices for this? Any tips would be awesome!
