#podfic problems

Ways we help Mama record audio:

- snore loudly

- scratch our ears and loudly jingle jangle our collars

everyday I am plagued by the urge to go into authors DMs and beg them to let me podfic their work and must grapple with the fact I already have a planned list of over 40 fic I need to record before I can reasonably do that T-T

Podfic problems

Okay, so I’m trying to make due with a cheap microphone until I can replace my Yeti, but I do not like this microphone. It’s terrible, which I was not expecting because it got really good reviews, but maybe it works better for streaming than podcasts/podfic.

When we had the medical emergency with Jareth. When cats are sick or in pain, they’ll go outside of their litter box. He apparently knew the best way to get our attention was take out the router and my microphone. So he peed on them.

He got our attention alright, but we had to replace both— I just haven’t replaced the mic yet because it’s expensive and I had lots of other unexpected costs between medical (for me and both Jareth and Rufus) and unexpectedly having to replace my husband’s vehicle (which means new monthly bill and higher ins) as well as costs we had prepared for but we’re suddenly scrambling to do it all and keep the lights on and gas in the tank (thus commissions. Thank y’all so much for that. I love you.)

And this new mic? TERRIBLE. So much static background noise that trying to edit it out makes me sound tinny and it still doesn’t get rid of it. Like, wtf? God, I miss my Snowball. That thing was eight years old and worked GREAT— but the software isn’t compatible with Windows 10 and they haven’t made a newer model.

If Momma wants to get me something for my birthday, I may ask if she can give me money to go toward the mic instead of clothes— which is what she normally buys and is how my mother shows love: she tries to feed and clothe you.

Editing audio of your own voice is a trip. You really do have all sorts of vocal quirks that you don’t realize. I apparently say “fer” for “for,” wait a long time before adding consonants at the ends of words (wai t), and use what I can only describe as sing-songy yet Christopher Walken-inspired prosody. Probably even more than I realized (let’s not discuss accents).

I’m also tired enough that I thought, “That’s a cute choice!” about the way a character said something, like it wasn’t me. Sigh.

TIL it is very difficult to sing in another language with another voice with another accent. Oof. Hats off to voice actors.
