For @poetreys, for the Rebelcaptain Secret Santa exchange.
“Finally!”, Bodhi had triumphantly crowed, catching sight of Jyn and Cassian kissing under the mistletoe he had so sneakily put up in the hallway of his small apartment.
He, and their other friends, had been trying to set up the two for years, and although Jyn and Cassian were the best of friends, partners in every other way, they never took the plunge into dating. “You’d be perfect together”, Bodhi had tried, exasperated every time one, or the other, or both would insist that no, it just wasn’t like that with each other.
Everybody could see that it was like that, though. It was clear in the way the two seemed to orbit each other constantly. It was obvious in the little touches, the not so secret little glances, and the way that they were practically inseparable. For all intents and purposes, they were already dating! Why couldn’t they just see it?
It took three heartbeats for Bodhi’s voice to cut through the pleasant haze surrounding them, though, and when it finally did, Jyn pulled away first, her cheeks flushed pink, a guiltily embarrassed expression on her face. Cassian was slower to react, and even though he straightened up, he never removed his arm from where he’d slid it around Jyn’s waist, still holding her close.
“What’s everybody staring at?”, he grumbled, glaring at friends who were a little too invested in their love lives, even though there was no particular heat behind his gaze. “It’s a party. Go and have some fun!”
Jyn rolled her eyes and huffed out a breath, slowly taking a step forward, waiting for Cassian to move with her. “Come on, if we’re going to continue this, I don’t want an audience.”
A cheer went up from their assembled friends, and she blushed all the darker, adamant upon getting Cassian somewhere private and away from prying eyes. They’d given enough of a show for one night, and truth be told, parties just weren’t their kind of scene. They’d made an appearance, what more did anyone want from them?
Making more excuses - that it was getting late, that they were getting tired, that the party was winding down anyway (it wasn’t), the pair of them managed to finagle their coats and escape into the frigid night air, holding hands as they quickly walked down sidewalks dusted with snow.
And when they were far enough away from Bodhi’s apartment building, Jyn couldn’t hold it in any longer, her laughter echoing all around them. “So, when do you want to tell them that we’ve been dating for two years now?”, she asked Cassian, her smile wide, just a touch sneaky.
Cassian shrugged his shoulders, his eyes glinting mischievously, “Not until after the New Year, at least. They’ve got a betting pool, and I want to win us as much as possible.”
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night, indeed.
