Had a great time this weekend rediscovering the 90s teen horror fiction of LJ Smith! My only prior experience was reading - I'm semi sure at a holiday camp library - one of the The Forbidden Game books and I feel like that became supremely influential on my own juvenalia and the beginnings of my writing ideas.
I haven't found that one again yet, but I've been reading another series starting with The Strange Power and it's delightfully 90s. I wish I'd read this one as a kid because I think it's slightly more age-appropriate (I vividly still remember in the one I read as a kid there's a blood sacrifice scene where a character I think bites herself to bleeding in order to provide the sacrifice) and exciting in how it's written too. Not unlike a proto-Runaways.
It's also very diverse for its time! That said, I think Gen Z (-led) discourse is guilty of making the 90s sound like the distant past and far more conservative than it actually was. Here, the main character is a white girl, but of her companions, one is Native (and treated without any heavy stereotyping or microaggressions that I picked up), another is East Asian, another is from the foster care system, and the fifth has a learning disability. Later on a character with punk style and a character who uses a wheelchair are introduced as well.
I'm getting these from the library and archive.org which is a great resource for a lot of children's and teen fiction you might not want to buy if you're just using it for research or reference! (Although I'm enjoying this on its own merit! It is I think perhaps unintentionally very funny at points)
Hussein Al-alak's Halloween monster mash
Here's hoping you all had a Happy Halloween, where among the highlights; I was the guest spooker on Manchester's Radio Offbeat, had the pleasure of watching An Inspector Calls and spent Halloween night in a haunted house.
Whilst doing the monster mash live on air, it was a delight to also talk about books like Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula, along with the legendary 90's teen classic Point Horror series.
Away from the talk of glowing pumpkins, we also shed light on the fabulous work of the AMAR International Charitable Foundation, Wood Street Mission and Iraqi Children Foundation (ICF), and gave a shoutout to our friends at the Tales From Point Horror book club.
Overall, it has been a spooktacular few days and with Christmas coming up, there are going to be plenty of treats to get involved in and these may see us through until the next Halloween.
