"But you've slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart."
Poison Study - Maria V. Snyder
Any Poison Study fans here? I’m reading them at the moment - gosh I love Valek so much
Judge a book by its first line: Poison Study (Chronicles of Ixia Book 1) by Maria V. Snyder
So I started my Chronicles of Ixia reread now that my books are in and I always give Valek shit for bekng infatuated right away, but Im on page 18, 2 pages into chapter 2, and Yelena's noticing how "The skin around Valek's eyes crinkled as he laughed. He had a strong, angular face, as if someone had stamped it from a sheet of metal, but it softened when he smiled".
Like, girl, I know you havent seen anyone but the prison guards in a year, but you have no reason to be waxing poetics about his face, especially since you're planning on running away...
Do you have a favorite book and or written series of any kind? Just curious :O
Oh that's tough!! A favorite? One favorite!? Hahaha I don't think I have just one but I can list out a few. Thank you for the ask!!
Through Wolf's Eyes (and the rest of the Firekeeper series) by Jane Lindskold:
I love the concept of being raised wild in a world of magic and political intrigue! The first time I read it I was maybe 13 or so and I had gone to a whole other state to visit my great grandma. She always encouraged me to read anything on her shelf I thought was interesting so when I saw the wolf on the cover I couldn't put it down. I finished the whole thing in a couple days (we only visited once a year, for a week at a time) and before I left she gave me that exact copy, I still have it on my shelf at home!
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel:
I love both the book and the tv series dearly! (Though they are quite different) I love the different perspectives and the jumping around in time. It weaves the story together in such a unique way and really touches on what it means to make your own family, how grief changes you, and how connected everything is...even when you don't realize it at the time. It is also one of the only post apocalyptic stories I've seen that has a happy/fulfilling ending focused on growth and the new path forward.
Six of Crows (and Crooked Kingdom) by Leigh Bardugo:
I resisted reading this when it first came out because of all the hype. I had friends trying to get me to read it FOREVER and I always was like no shade, but I'm not really looking for something romance centered with maybe some fantasy magic sprinkled on afterwards. Can I just say "my bad" 🤣 one particular friend finally got me to read it by telling me it was a heist story. I do like heists...she knows me too well! Once I started I just couldn't stop and I absolutely love both books to pieces!!
Poison Study (and its series, along with the spin off series...and Sea Glass specifically) by Maria V. Snyder:
I love heists and spies and political intrigue! I read these first in high school, though they are definitely adult novels, but by that point I had read out my YA section at the library pretty thoroughly. It also has a bit of romance and the magic system is absolutely my favorite! I only read the first three of Poison Study and then read the other series as well, now I've heard there are more in the Poison Study line and haven't quite gotten to them yet. As a side note, the audiobooks are also fantastic!
Mistborn (and the entire series) by Brandon Sanderson:
Interesting world building and magic is a draw for me and this totally has it. Spies and political intrigue with absolutely the COOLEST concept for magic's cost!! I still think about this one all the time and it is definitely due for a re-read soon 😁
I could go on forever, but sadly I have to get to work soon so I'll stop with those. Thank you again!
Yelena to Valek: Hey, be safe.
Valek: I will.
Janco to Ari dramatically: Be safe.
Ari, equally dramatic: I'll be so safe.
Yelena: Guys stop.
