Chapter Three – Discovery
Dean Winchester, nerd, car enthusiast, and State Police Detective, was doing his best to relax on his couch. He was still worried about Sam, the little brother who had disappeared a few months before. He'd gone missing shortly after proposing to his best friend of nearly eleven years. They'd been dating since about three months after Sam had filed for divorce from Jessica Moore.
Dean couldn't blame him. He would have done a lot more than filed for divorce after finding his wife in bed with a stranger. He would have probably committed murder. Sam's fiance was also a very beautiful woman who believed in going the extra mile for her friends and family. She just had a spirit that seemed to glow, chasing away the darkness and pain.
It had been the older blond Winchester who had encouraged his younger brother to finally ask the woman out... and he sincerely hoped it hadn't gotten Sam killed.
He was about to go visit his parents for dinner when he noticed something in his icon tray. It was a program he'd gotten off a friend to keep an eye out for his brother's cell phone signal. The phone had apparently been connected to a power source, and he'd used the program to put out a perpetual signal to the phone to turn on if it got a power source, and if it came in contact with a cell tower.
Dean clicked on the icon, bringing the program up. He immediately picked up his phone. He dialed his captain. The man answered on the third ring and he breathed a sigh of relief. “Captain, he said. “It's Detective Winchester... I got a hit on my brother's cell phone.”
“I know. The detectives that are handling the case just found that it had a signal.”
“I'm going with them to find Sammy.”
“I'm not going to stop you, Winchester. Just be careful.... and take that angel friend of yours with you.”

A few hours later, Sam awoke, his eyes unable to focus. Jess was sitting on the bed next to him. She smoothed the hair out of his eyes when he looked at her, and smiled at him. “You poor baby,” she said softly to him. “You look awful.”
“Let me go,” he said weakly.
“I'm sorry, but I can't do that. It would be another story if you'd not insisted on that damned prenuptial agreement, or you hadn't filed for divorce so quickly after catching me with the gardener.”
“Kid's not mine, is it?”
“Well, if you must know, it isn't,” she confessed, looking at the clock.
A shadowy figure entered the room a few moments later. Sam had started to fall back asleep, his eyelids too heavy to keep open, when he was brought back to awareness by a deep voice... one he recognized. It was a demon that he was familiar with.... Yellow Eyes.
“Love, I just got your message,” Azazel purred. “What's wrong?”
“Things aren't going according to plan.”
Azazel seemed to consider this. “Well, Love,” he said smoothly, “I warned you that switching one Sam Winchester for another in an alternate reality wasn't a good idea.”
Sam narrowed his eyes at the demon. “Jess... please tell me you haven't made a deal with him.”
“What would you care, and how would you know about something like that?”
“My boy, your beautiful wife didn't need to make a deal with me. She's a Reaper.”
Sam took a deep breath, struggling against his bonds weakly. It made Jess laugh, seeing the pained expression on his face.
“Darling,” she said softly. “You don't know what it does to me to see you hurting like you are. Should have never filed for the divorce, embarrassing me in front of Death, God, and Heaven alike. No one upstairs condones divorce, and if they knew, they'd chase me out of my job.”
“I'm not the one who filed for the divorce. The Sam from this reality did! I get it, you're killing me, but what's the demon here for?”
“To drag your sorry ass to Hell as soon as you're dead, why else? If you're in Hell, you won't be able to tell anyone on me, and my reputation in Heaven will remain intact.” She grabbed a syringe off the dresser, filled with clear fluid. “Here, this won't hurt a bit.” She was just about to stick it in his arm when the bedroom door, which Azazel had shut and locked, was blown open, splinters going everywhere.
Both demon and reaper's eyes were wide open when a being that glowed stepped into the room, black wings spreading behind him. Azazel was the first to attack. His aim was off, hitting the angel in the stomach. It just made the winged being cock his head at him before touching his head, killing the demon immediately.
The body fell away, and Jess started to back away from the bed. “Castiel, we can talk about this... there is no need to go committing murder. How would God feel?”
“I have my orders, Jessica,” Castiel replied. “You are to be brought to Heaven to be dealt with.”
“Freeze! State Police,” A voice shouted from the doorway, gun drawn. There were a few others with him, but Sam recognized his brother immediately. He looked different in this reality, but he recognized him.
Making a last ditch effort to get away, Jess pulled a blade from her sleeve and lunged at the angel. He didn't have a choice, pulling his own blade and inserting it into her chest. She lit up for a second, a surprised look on her face, before she slid off the knife.
“Stand down,” he shouted to those who had come with him. “Go make sure the ambulance can get here...” He gave his orders before turning to the angel. “You okay, Cas,” Dean asked, uncocking his gun and putting the safety on.
“I am unharmed.”
“Thank God,” the blond man said, going over to his brother's side. “Hey kid, how you feeling? You hurt?”
Sam looked at him sleepily, shutting his eyes.
“He's been drugged and poisoned. I can heal him.”
“Thanks, man,” Dean replied while he was untying the younger man. He was so happy to know his brother was alive that he hadn't even noticed that the angel was withholding information.
Castiel approached the side of the bed that Sam was tied to. He studied the brunet before placing a hand on his forehead.
“Did it work?”
“It did. He will sleep for a few days however.”
“Probably for the best.”
“Yes... Dean, there is something I need to tell you...”
“Yeah, Cas?”
“This isn't your brother. This is a Sam Winchester from another reality. Jessica was a reaper, and apparently switched them in hopes of keeping him from getting away when she'd kidnapped him... trying to create an illusion of happiness so he wouldn't divorce her and ruin her reputation.”
“So where's my brother?”
“I assume he's in the other reality.”
“Damn,” Dean said softly.
“There is a way to be sure... I need to contact myself in the other reality.”
“Yeah,” came the reply. He had turned his attention to Jess's body. “Any chance that the kid...?”
“She is not pregnant. It is a trick of the eye done using dark magic to alter her looks.”
