Pokefoxes: What fox they are? pt3
Fennekin
Fox: Fennec fox
The easiest to identify, they are the dog from Chinese zodiac (fire starters theory) and is based on the Fennec fox. A small desert fox with big ears, creamy yellow fur with touches of orange and white.
A good pick for another fire type fox. Fennekin is the only stage that is more animalistic than antro, keeping their line’s theme hidden (as seen with other starter pokemons).

Once again the Japanese with their kitsunes, and like Vulpix and Zorua it borrows a different aspect from them, in this case: their “role” as witches/magic.
Kitsunes are associated to fire and witchcraft, as well as having the ability to turn into or possess beautiful women that bewitch men.
There are to two separate types of fox-related “witches”: the kitsune-tsukai, and the kitsune-mochi.
Delphox
Fox: Fennec fox (kitsune)
Delphox fur resembles a witch robe and the stick a wand (European witches) + kitsune, fire, fox and powers
The kitsune-tsukai, gains his fox familiar by bribing it with its favorite foods, striking up a deal with the fox, typically promising food and daily care in return for the fox's magical services.
The kitsune-mochi, kitsunes able to possess human beings and cause them to behave in strange ways. A person possessed by a fox spirit often develops physical features that appear fox-like.
Common belief in medieval Japan was that any woman encountered alone, especially at dusk or night, could be a kitsune.

Lets start in chronological order
Vulpix
Fox: Red fox (kitsune)
Reddish colors, white belly, fluffy tail(s), dark limbs, medium length ears. The “classic” and most popular fox species is the perfect look to base your first fox of the series.
Fox: Arctic fox (kitsune)
The perfect complement to Vulpix’s red fox. Red and arctic foxes are some of the most popular fox species, although it shows darker limbs like the red foxes. Fire-ice opposites.
Ninetales
Fox: Kitsune
Although cream-orange fox exist with darker tail tips (Kit fox, a Northern American species), Ninetales is a direct reference and totally inspired by kitsunes, the Japanese word for fox.
Stories depict legendary foxes as intelligent beings and as possessing paranormal abilities that increase with their age and wisdom.
The more tails a kitsune has – they may have as many as nine – the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. (Proto-Vulpix 3 tails vs Vulpix’s 6 vs Ninetales 9).
After reaching 1,000 years of age and gaining its ninth tail, a kitsune turns a white or golden color, becoming a tenko ('heavenly/celestial fox'), the most powerful form of the kitsune, and then ascends to the heavens.
Fox: Arctic fox (kitsune)
They continue with their reversing of themes, now the limbs and tail tips are pale, one of the most popular colors for kitsunes is white.
