I finally got myself a Pokémon Pikachu, here under its Japanese branding as "Pocket Pikachu".
I remember the commercial for these with its infectious jingle, and spite of being such a Pokémon nerd back the height of Pokémania I didn't get one at the time, and didn't have my own until the Pokémon Pikachu 2 came out in conjunction with Pokémon Gold and Silver.
Even though the Pokémon Pikachu 2 had a color screen and could actually interact with Pokemon Gold and Silver on Game Boy Color using the IR port on the console to beam up cool stuff like items... the less useful and less colorful original version just had something uniquely classic about it and I've been distantly eyeing one for years and that fact that I at last started playing Pokemon Red over on Twitch and also covering Pokemania in general put me over the edge.
I didn't expect the Japanese version to be far more readily available and often less expensive than the US one, perhaps they made more of them.
I also didn't realize I'd be getting the Japan-only carrying case, which has a belt loop so you can attach it to your waist while keeping it free of scratches.
Yep. Finally nice to have one of these.
Seems there's some new official art to hype up Pokemon day. Here's the ones relevant to the blog. Ah the memories.

I’m back on tumblr...and I wrote a book!
Well, I’m here again, and ready to retweet Ken Sugimori Pokémon art and Batman Returns gifs as the lord intended. However, since I’ve been gone, I’ve kept busy...
I wrote a book! It’s called Monster Kids: How Pokémon Taught A Generation To Catch Them All and it’s about the creation of Pokémon and the ensuing “Pokemania” years that would change pop culture forever. The audio book is narrated by Veronica Taylor, the original voice of Ash Ketchum! You can catch yourself a copy here!
I tried to make a Pokemon red/green style sprite based off the banjo-inspired pokemon i made a few months back

also, it just dawned on me that the Banjo-Kazooie games were release during peak Pokemania. makes me feel nostalgic
