The Ice Type in Generation I
Generation I introduced five Ice-type Pokémon and six Ice-type moves.
Two of the Pokémon, Dewgong and Cloyster, only gain the Ice type upon evolving. The other three did not evolve to or from any other Pokémon; no Ice-type Pokémon evolves further.
All Ice-type Pokémon require either fishing or surfing to get; this means the player will probably have four or more gym badges by the time they can get any Ice Pokémon.
Two Ice-type moves, Ice Beam and Blizzard, can be taught to several Pokémon with their respective TMs; this includes all actual Ice-type Pokémon, who also tend to learn them by level up.
The other four Ice-type moves have much more limited distribution. In terms of damaging moves, Aurora Beam is only learned by Dewgong and Cloyster's evolutionary families, while Ice Punch is only learned by Hitmonchan and Jynx. The support move Haze is only learned by the Vaporeon and the Zubat and Koffing families, while Mist can be learned by Lapras, Vaporeon, Articuno, and Mewtwo.
Most Ice-type moves got straightforward translations; however, Haze and Mist were known as Black Mist and White Mist in the original.
