Headcanon: World Building
After the Pokétch, there was a desire for something that would be able to handle everything a trainer could possibly want. With the world ever-changing, the old staples of the mounted video phones and several dedicated devices were becoming clutter, and many trainers thought there had to be a better way. They wanted to not only talk with their friends, but access their Pokédex easily, and share their journey with loved ones. The Pokédex and Pokétch were replaced with an all-in-one device called the Poké Net. A very powerful handheld with the ability to store the National Pokédex database (trainers can only get the databases from certified labs, to encourage the activity of trainers meeting with that region’s professor), as well as coming equipped with a camera on both sides, the ability to store music and videos, browse online and make and receive calls and messages. It also supports video calling, although the best quality is still achieved by a video phone.
It is essentially their world’s smartphone. There are later evolutions and designs of the basic concept of the Poké Net, much like how there is more than one smartphone. There is even a bit of "iPhone vs Android" type rivalry. Later on, as trainers were burying their faces in their new handhelds to stay up to date, the Pokétch was re-released with the intent of being a companion for the Poké Net, much like our smartwatch.
