The other good news (part 2a)
A new quest; an active mind. Venture south, sin passport, sans paddle, ohne Scheiss.
Getting my head in gear was easier than getting “El Vargas” in gear; 18 speed minus 3. The top three.. At least my two remaining #PolarBottle -s fitted nicely on the handlebar!
I started where I inadvertantly left off, Pucon, and I was treated to the volcanic eruption of Volcano Villarrica.
As you can see the Samsung Galaxy Sii (#4) does it much justice, below, a meat artists representation thereof. The show was spectacular and drew a lot of media attention in Chile, for a few days at least - operation evacuation station was the main perogative. I realised I’d spent enough time in Pucon and got moving.
The next natural wonder bestowed upon my solo southern cycle was this mighty moon. It guided me for a couple of hours into the night to a (sofa) bed courtesy of #WarmShowers host Mathilde in Panguipulli. A BBQ awaited my arrival, with two french cyclists staying the night too, just a couple of months into their Ushuaia - Alaska trip!
Plenty of porridge for the podgy peddler. Punf.
A few refreshingly uneventful wildcamps later I made it to Valdivia. Where, Alonso, my boy - to whom I owe a great deal to for providing a safehouse in Santiago - was waiting for me with open arms, and more importantly an open house with an open bed. The window was closed, however. Here he is in most of his glory back on 6th September 2014, when we first met... (for the second time) in Iguassu, Brazil at la Casa de Ciclistas.
Alonso went off picking almonds so I got guided tours from his Paco Poppa for the next couple of days. Here`s a submarine, a permenant fixture at the riverside market..
The pacific coast is but a hilly 15 km cycle ride due west, and there lies a couple of sleepy fishing villages, waking only in January and February when Chile is rife with tourism.
Along with a long, sandy beach, Niebla boasts a huge fort, used on many occasion over the years since the mid 16th Century spanish-settlers began colonising Valdivia, trying to make it a strong hold in the south of Chile. Many battles were fought, and some were lost to the natives, the place was deserted and briefly occupied by the dutch, before the spaniards returned with more soldiers. In the 19th Century, Lord Cochrane, an Englishman would eventually aid Chile in gaining independence from Spain, sneakily avoiding these cannons pictured below by attacking on land.
dem sea lions tho..
