Shibori Techniques: Pole Wrapping

Alicia demonstrated her favorite shibori technique on Thursday, called Arashi or pole wrapping. She explained how the resist-dye patterns are created using an ingenious process of wrapping cloth around a pole or other cylindrical object, compressing it into folds with string, and dyeing it.

Here’s a video that shows the pole wrapping process again to refresh your memory. (Just ignore the dye info presented here that uses grocery store dyes which will not give you the kind of control and depth for your color as the fiber reactive and acid dyes we use in class.)
