The drop-off in players for fighting games is brütal; I look at the player numbers on Steam here and again, and maaaan, people stop playing games so fast. Go peek at KOF XV or Melty Type Lumina; these games were just at EVO a minute ago.

Part of the issue here is, there might be too many new fighting games getting released too often, and 2D players especially might be getting trained to jump to the hot new game as soon as it releases. Basically only Tekken, Street Fighter and Guilty Gear Strive seem stable; MK11 actually has more players on Steam than MK1 does right now, which is nuts.

The only solution here is -- more people need to play fighting games, and more fighting games people need to play games that are more-niche. We gotta like... incentivize this behavior somehow.

Is there a game that you love but isn't super popular? Maybe go play it?

(tell you what, I'ma go play some Tekken 7 instead of Tekken 8 for a day or two.)

The time has come for us to add a constitutional amendment that fighting games, if they are online at all, must have crossplay, and Good Rollback. (or something better, to be determined by Sajam)

Old games will be retrofitted with these, by law. If a company is unwilling or unable to do it themselves, we'll establish a Civilian Netcode Corps to improve netplay. It will be illegal to not let them fix up your game.

The cost of doing this will be offset by (a) tax benefits for fighting game development companies and (b) increased sales, because we're establishing weekly FOR ME IT WAS A TUESDAY day, where everybody is encouraged (with tax write-offs and small grants) to play randomly selected fighting games on Tuesday evening, every week.
