You know who runs big gaming events and has pretty good posi vibes and is in favor of human rights broadly incl/esp LGBTQ+ rights?

GDQ. I was just thinking, what if there was an org like GDQ that ran big fighting game events? In fact, what if GDQ themselves expanded into running fighting game tournaments, as big charity streams? We could get people to donate to Doctors Without Borders and other good causes. At a fighting game event.

I just wrote them an email in fact. Surely, surely this will work and we'll see GDQ-organized fighting game tournaments shortly. (the specific email under the cut)

Does this seem like a sensible idea to you? Would you support GDQ-affiliated fighting game events, or is this idea bad for some reason I hadn't considered?

Hello GDQ, Just to throw an idea out there, have you ever considered running fighting game tournaments and bringing a similar vibe to your GDQ events? We're currently simultaneously in a fighting game boom, but also the big fighting game events have been bought out by the Saudi royal family, who are currently trying to use them for sportswashing purposes. This year's EVO Vegas, despite the new games just released and fairly positive vibes around Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, had a downturn in attendees. Having an explicitly human-rights and trans-rights positive big fighting game event would be a breath of fresh air for the fighting game community, especially since many of us are LGBTQ+ or allies. Also many FGC members are speedrunning enthusiasts as well (I think the mindsets required are pretty similar!), so there might be some good overlap with your existing audience. some side games I've messed with in recent memory outside of Tekken, with their upsides and downsides:

Street Fighter 6: everything about Akuma is the illest ever and I love how he looks and feels in SF6; I kinda dislike the Drive system and don't love looking at a lot of the characters. But I like how there are lots of different shapes of ladies. They got Marisa and Manon and Kimberly and they're super charming. I love Akuma's musical theme and it plays all the time which is so sick.

Guilty Gear Strivé: they made I-No's hat *enormous*. Actually playing the game hasn't grabbed me yet? I like I-No's theme but I haven't yet figured out how to make the game play a different song ever? ...

fighting game highlight moments from yesterday evening

hit a guy with a raging demon to end the match. I'm not yet very good at Street Fighter 6 (check out my majestic Silver rank), but any day where you kill somebody with a demon is a pretty good day. I think I'm starting to understand how to play SF6.

promoted Reina to GoD 1 in Tekken 8. I didn't love Reina when she was first announced (I remember me and @claudioseraph were both hating on her tbh), but once the game came out and I got to play her -- she's so much fun. Cute girl Mishima, with the Mishima rage and imperiousness, and she makes a *really satisfying* electric sizzle noise when she's wavedashing. Great demon paw, good df1, electrics, hellsweeps. I can work with that.

I can probably get the rest of the family to GoD1 too. Kazuyer is at GoD2 (and I could probably climb higher...), but I can get both versions of Jin and Heihachi to GoD1 at least...
