Effects of air pollution on kids: A parental guide
Air pollution is an inevitable part of our lives today. Our polluted air has everyone gasping and struggling for fresh air. In worse situations, people have decreased sleep, decreased work performance and even suffer from lung disease and cancer. In all this life-threatening and dangerously smoggy atmosphere, our children are the worst hit. The lungs of small children are not fully developed.
A newborn baby only has twenty percent of an adult's lung mass which is only complete in his or her teenage years when a child’s lungs are strong enough to somewhat bear the onslaught of pollution. Because of the child’s underdeveloped lungs, they tend to breathe rather quickly and inhale more of the pollutants than a fully grown human being. A child’s ability to fight off the effects of air pollution is also much lesser than an adult’s.
Also, the immunity of a child is not so well developed to be able to manage infections. This results in respiratory problems linked to air pollution such as asthma. Because of this, the overall health of a child gets severely affected. A child who is still developing can have serious health issues owing to air pollution compared to an adult. Our children are more exposed to the outdoors in parks, playgrounds, and schoolyards during playtime and other activities, while the adults are usually ensconced in closed offices for large portions of the day. In all this, it's extremely essential for parents to be aware of the air quality around their child.
During pregnancy, expectant parents need to ensure that they have a conducive air quality at home. The latest research shows that even your unborn baby is at the risk of facing air pollution. Women need to be careful when stepping out as a car’s deadly exhaust fumes can result in premature birth. Air pollution is powerful enough to create myriad problems for premature and weak infants which can certainly be avoided with steps to better manage air quality. As far as outdoor pollution is concerned, our government needs to act swiftly and responsibly. Unfortunately, indoor pollution is worse than outdoors. A parent needs to be able to manage indoor pollutants to help their child have clean and healthy lungs.
However dismal the scene may be, there is still hope.
Parents can go the extra mile by ensuring that their home is squeaky clean and free of any common allergens such as dust, pollen and pet dander. Removal of carpets and rugs would also be a great way to keep your home germ free. Harsh chemicals found in household cleaning agents should be avoided and Vinegar would make a good option.
Finally, good ventilation, filtering the air and opening a few windows will greatly help in reducing pollution.

Delhi records 3.7 degrees C, air quality ‘severe’
New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) Engulfed in a blanket of shallow fog and haze, the national capital on Sunday recorded 3.7 degrees Celsius — the coldest day this December with the air quality remaining ‘severe’, the Met department said. The visibility at 8.30 a.m. was 500 metres and the humidity was at 94 per cent — a condition not favourable for dispersal of pollutants. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index at 8 a.m. was 441 with major pollutants being PM2.5 and PM10. “The sky was partly cloudy. Haze and smoke is expected even in the afternoon,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said. The maximum temperature was likely to hover around 22 degrees Celsius. Biting cold conditions were also prevailing in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, the IMD official told IANS. Saturdays’s maximum temperature was 21.8 degrees Celsius, average for the season, while the minimum temperature was 4 Read the full article
Red Alart of Pollution in Delhi-NCR, Advisory to avoid burning of incense sticks.
Delhi has become the gas chamber. All scientific scale shows that the air has become terribly poisonous. This is the situation when Diwali has not come. But now it has come to close the school and stop the house itself. Simultaneously, the people of the capital have been advised not to burn incense-sticks etc in worship. Over the last 24 hours, it was burned in large quantities Centrally operated 'System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research' (SAFAR) has attributed this fall of the air quality in the last 24 hours due to straw burning and stay of air. Officials of the SAFAR said that due to regional factors such as PM of air has risen 2.5 to 28 percent pollution in the air, in the photograph taken from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) satellite, many states have seen a fire in many places around Delhi. Dustproof masks are also not good enough In the CPCB, Additional Director of the Air Quality Management Division, D Saha said that the quality of air in entire northern India with 'Gangetic plains' is 'very bad' with 'serious'. SAFAR has issued a consultation to the people of Delhi saying that they cannot depend solely on dust masks for protection. Keep putting in the house wet mop It said that if there are windows in the room, then close them. If the air conditioner has the facility of fresh air, then turn it off and avoid burning anything which includes wood, candles and even incense-sticks. In the consultation, it has been asked from time to time to wet mask and use N.95 or P.100 masks. President-Prime Minister's house also air 'poisonous' There is so much poison in the air of Delhi that the common man is so helpless. Nor can the Prime Minister breathe peace and neither President. The amount of PM10 at India Gate is 500. PM10 has reached 497 in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan. The PM10 is 497 in front of Parliament. Strictly demonstrated to the Supreme Court If the Air Quality Index is between 400 and 500, then it is frightening. Such air is dangerous for people of all ages. When this country is running out of the horrific situation, the Supreme Court itself has to be rigorously demonstrated. Supreme Court issues order to stop pollution. Green Firecrackers' From All I Know According to the order, only Green Fireworks will run in Delhi and NCR on Diwali. Fireworks will also be only two hours, from 8 pm to 10 pm. But what are these 'green crackers', information about this is not to shoppers and not to the Delhi Police? The condition of Delhi's connected cities is also bad Due to the poison of air, only Delhi does not suffocate, the surroundings of the surrounding cities are also very bad. If you put a sighted gas chamber on the cities connected with Delhi then you will know the magnitude of the situation. Air quality index should be less than 100 for good health. But Ghaziabad's AQ 430 has reached Noida's AQ 374, Greater Noida's AQ 385; Gurgaon's AQ has reached 389. Things have not only deteriorated in Delhi NCR. In Kanpur, the AQ 422 is touching. Neutralization of trains Responsibility for pollution cannot be imposed solely on burns and factory operators. The Supreme Court has banned diesel trains in Delhi 10 years ago. But in the neighboring city Noida-Ghaziabad, there are 1, 80,000 cars in the road despite the ban. There are 1 lakh 51 thousand 439 trains that are more than 10 years old. 30 thousand 131 cars that are more than 15 years old are diesel. And every diesel car gets 16 times more poison than gasoline carriages. Read the full article
