Response to Climate Change:

Due to the warming of native climates sugar maples may become less common in southern New England latitudes. The same trend is seen with sap production crucial to the maple syrup business. The tapping season is highly dependent on weather conditions and climate change is greatly impacting it’s productivity. Research has shown a decrease in sap production in southern areas and greater production in the north. 

 Maple trees need the insulating snow pack to protect its shallow roots from deeply frozen soil, without the snowpack the trees are projected to grow 40% slower. By the end of the century, snowpack could decrease by 95%.
