i think the thing that makes me so deranged abt disco elysium is that no one is guaranteed safety and support. right? im so used to stories about illness where the end always reiterates that they have had support, that its ok that theyre ill, that they have a support system no matter how ill they are. they are Safe. that they couldve always cried for help and someone wouldve came. speaking in therapy only for the upper-middleclass.

but. very few characters in de, no matter how healthy they seem, have that safety net. that reassurance that it will end up ok, right?

harry has, by the start of the game, sucked the pity out of every support system he holds. and there is no one to catch him when he falls. we have good reason to believe his mother is long passed by the time our game opens.

id argue kims circumstances are even worse - hes a war orphan with no family and friends, the man closest to him having died probably recently (doms case notes in this years notebook). the one community he could find - the homosexual underground - probably (rightfully!) distrusts him immensely for, well, Being A Fucking Cop. its implied his precinct almost resents him for being a skilled seolite man (the 15 years in juvenile, he immediately takes the transfer offer, hes sent to a life or death case alone, etc.) hes alone.

jean is a man with severe depression, known and diagnosed - and he is still working himself to death years later. the doctors call it a miracle he hasnt killed himself.

cuno and c are forgotten children. the pigs is incredibly neglected, despite being known and "beloved" in some way. ruby and klaasje are women who are dead in the eyes of any law, the world has left them behind. the drunks who save harry are dead to this world too.

and thats what makes it impossible for me to wonder why kim and harry end up partnered (implied; i think that happens after the transfer, anyway) if hes there by the end. because for the first time, they have Someone else, someone who cares. this applies equally i think. or at least as equally as possible for harrys state during the game.

just.. before the events of the game, what wouldve happen to harry or kim or jean, for that matter, if they had gotten seriously, month long recovery, sick? could they afford recovery? would they have just worked to death? would they have had a chance of surviving?

but now, kim wouldnt let harry die like that. not alone. not rotting with an illness he cant afford to heal. same thing goes both ways. kim saved him, and harry owes him everything and more than that, he loves him. he wont let him die either. jean is finally in a spot where he isnt just harrys savior; he has kim and a slowly recovering harry and judit, who just transferred (idk if its comon knowledge, but she only transferred like 2 months before the events of the game.) like. they have support for the first time ever. They Can Rest. makes me soft.
