Palawan Peacock Pheasant by Aamir Yunus Via Flickr: Thanks "Ineedathis" for telling us the name. More info from wiki: The Palawan Peacock-pheasant, Polyplectron napoleonis also known as Napoleon Peacock-pheasant is a medium-sized, up to 50cm long, bird in the family Phasianidae. It was long known as Polyplectron emphanum (Dickinson 2001). The male is the handsomest and most peacock-like member of genus Polyplectron. It has an erectile crest, white stripe over eye, and highly iridescence metallic green and black plumage. The tail feathers are decorated with large blue-green ocelli, which may be spread fan-like in courtship display. The female is smaller than male. It has a dark brown plumage with short crest, and whitish on throat, cheeks and eyebrow.

The Palawan peacock-pheasant, Polyplectron napoleonis, is endemic to the island of Palawan in the Philippines. I was not sure how easy it would be to see this species during my visit in April, but it proved to be surprising easy.

As the name suggests, the Palawan Peacock-pheasant is found on the island of Palawan, a part of the Philippine archipelago. They are largely insectivorous, living off of insect larvae, grubs, earwigs, and small frogs, as well as some seeds and berries. Like other peacock-pheasants, the male has bright plumage and a large tail which he can hold up like a fan when courting females. To begin courting, the male holds a piece of food in his beak which we waves in view of the female, he then drops the food and waits for her to eat it. After she has accepted his food he begins his display, fanning his tail while strutting around her and making a hissing sound. They are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat destruction and hunting.

This male has lived near the ranger station at Underground River for about 6 years and is quite tame - he followed us around for about an hour! What a beauty!
