I got a free mystery plant from the nursery and it’s the ponytail palm! I got 7 plants out of one pot 👍🏾 It’s actually not a palm, it’s a succulent from Mexico.

Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is native to the state of Veracruz Mexico but is also a popular ornamental plant, Despite the name, it is not a palm but is in the same family as Agaves and Yuccas. I have one that I got as a seedling that is now about 10 inches tall. I'm not sure how large the one at the greenhouse is but it's well over my head - probably about 10 feet tall. This is a closeup of the expanded caudex which is a distinguishing feature of this plant.

Pony tail palm

For weeks, I would walk past this little buggar in the grocery store. I wanted it sooooo bad.. but I was broke. It sucks having to adult. But my patience paid off! She is miiiiine!

Look at the growth structure of this ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata): the stem has been growing uncut for many years so there is just a single growth point (📷 2). Compare this to the usual way of cultivating a ponytail palm - a thick trunk that had been cut, which gives rise to multiple growth points at the stump and thinner leaves. Beaucarnea recurvata (Ponytail palm) served three ways - okay, the correct term is "cultivated" in three ways: 1) The classical large stump with fine leaves. This particular specimen caught my eye because of its extra-thin and dense foliage 2) Little baby sprouts 3) Onion-like sprout. This larger bulb produced one beautifully symmmetrical rosette of coarse foliage. .
