TRANS FLAG IN "DEATH TO THE DALEKS" CONFIRMED????????
I didn't know much about Five before starting his run, I heard Big Finish's Spare Parts and Creatures of Beauty, but I really didn't get his Doctor until Castrovalva and now The Visitation (I also saw Kinda). He's... kinda like a 50-60 year old lone father and provider of three that is also a little bit of a nervous wreck in the body of a young looking 30 years old. He also really tries his best, in a life that seems only to reserve him trouble and pain, and he really cares about his little dysfunctional family, even if he's so scared to show it. I absolutely love him.
I'm watching the Sea Devils. I love the scene of the Master watching the children's cartoons 😭. The sword fight between the Doctor and the Master is incredible, especially when the Doctor starts to eat the sandwich and then gives back the Master's sword. The scene with the Doctor and Jo communicating with each other from opposite sides of a window is so cute! They are so in sync. The design of the Sea Devils is peak. The cliffhanger of ep4 is delicious, unfortunately this is the second time that I watch it so it isn't as strong. I was surprised that the Doctor almost succeeded in making peace with the silurians if not for the shitty humans.
So, I'm watching "The Visitation" and oh boy do I have some thoughts!
I love how at the start have a perfect example of the disfunctional and troubled, yet loving underneath, is the relationship between the Doctor and Adric. The Doctor is scolding severely Adric, who's trying to defend himself, for the events in Kinda, "Adric, always in trouble" says Nyssa, his main desire is trying to prove himself to his pathernal figure and he seem to fail repeatedly, "and I try so hard" says Adric as the Doctor look him with pain and his eyes and then rolls them; "it will seem strange without her, although I'm not entirely convinced that she likes me" Adric says, he's clearly fond of her, and the possibility that she isn't must be very painful for him, "now don't jump to conclusion Adric, sometimes we humanoid try to disguise our true feelings" and here we realize how this Doctor works: he's stern, sarcastic, with a veneer of patriarchal aloofness and manner, but all of this is just an act, a drag defence mechanism for a genderless and extremely hurt alien, what great worries and pain hides behind those eyes? How much love he feels and can't bring himself to show? "Well don't just stand there Adric help me!" He shouts trying to move on from a moment of too much sincerity and emotional intimacy.
We change scene and we see Tegan adjusting herself in the mirror while Nyssa reads, for Tegan the events of Kinda just sunk in and she open up to Nyssa, who in all of this is surprised that something traumatic happened because the Doctor told her it was uneventful, "he would" says Tegan, another shield to disguise his guilt about what happened to her companion, another moment of intimacy avoided. Then Tegan says goodbye to Nyssa, clearly emotional she says "I'll miss you" (lesbianz lol) "I'll miss all of you" she even adds, Adric is wrong, Tegan is fond of him. Then disaster strucks, the Doctor landed the TARDIS wrongly again, and Tegan is emotionally destroyed, they argue and Tegan storms off, the Doctor is hurt "why does she always overeact", "I think she find the idea of going more painful than she thought" remarks Tegan, "then why didn't she say so!" Shouts the Doctor actively admonishing her for something he does on the regular (...) "perhaps you better talk to her" says Adric, "no no no, too much has been said already" says cowardly the Doctor, the others are silent, "earthlings" he says with disdain and then storming off himself.
They are a mess and I love them so so much.
And for now I cut myself here because this post is too long arleady
Paradise Towers is such a camp masterpiece, I was hooked from start to finish, I loved every episode. The red and blue Kangs? Amazing, the lesbian Cannibal ladies? Scrumptious, the Caretakers? Love some incompetent fascists, Pex? Incredible, the 7th Doctor? Love when he can be clownish, Mel? She's literally made of sunshine. Might be one of the most enjoyable serial of all of Classic Who
I'm rewatching Inferno and Oh My God I love Liz, how did I forget how much I love her
Just started watching Remembrance of the Daleks, like I'm at part one, and oh my god Ace and the Doctor are such a menace together I love them
So I'm rewatching "The Invasion" (incredible serial btw), I'm specifically at episode five when Isobel suggest photographing the Cybermen as proof of their existence, and I had a terrible realization that that a part of me found it a little bit jarring, mainly because ya know, today we have generative AI (also known as hell); and immediately after Jamie and the Brigadier bonding over their sexism 😭 and then failing miserably to stop Isobel and Zoe, go girlies I support you!
Kevin Stoney as always is amazing and makes Vaughn so iconic, and has so much chemistry with Peter Halliday as PACKERR.
I LOVE how at the end of episode 7 it's Zoe that saves the day with the power of MATH and enormous mental capacity and calculations.
