A lovers’ quarrel between Pacino and Keaton, apparently over his reluctance to commit to a permanent relationship, threatened to disrupt the already chaotic production further. As if Keaton’s puffy-eyed appearance on the set in the morning wasn’t enough, the door of their adjoining dressing-room was shut tight. Then came news of a great personal sadness, the death of Pacino’s grand-mother Kate Gerard. Accompanied by a tearful Keaton, Pacino flew back to New York to attend the funeral. On the couple’s return it appeared, despite a still-tangible strain, that an accommodation had been reached. It was as well, for one of the next scenes to be filmed was the big reconciliation in the Sicilian countryside between Michael and Kay. ‘Our relationship at times has been complicated,’ Pacino later admitted.
