But then serves as the supreme commander of the Galactic Alliance Defense Force and leads the Galactic Alliance (coming from the union of the New Republic with the Imperial Remnant) through both the Swarm War and the Second Galactic Civil War.
Retires again.
But then he comes back to serve again as leader of the Imperial Remnant (and I would like to point out that when he does man is in his nineties) up to his assassination in 41 ABY when he refuses to support Darth Caedus/Jacen Solo (who he really didn't like)'s faction of the Galactic Alliance.
Through all his life he retained a well earned popularity and autorithy among the Imperial Remnant's Moffs and he was kept in high esteem by the New Republic as well. He particularly had a close and mutually considerate working relationship with Leia Organa.

I mean I get it that laenor was a dead beat son, husband, non father. And it was necessary for her to produce legitimate children with him or ones that looked like them. Instead it was something else altogether.
Rhaenyra should have chosen a more valyrian looking man for that. Sure she loved harwin strong and I get her perspective but she was also the heir. That was just a rookie mistake on her part, thrice in a row.
And let's talk about Laenor. How come Viserys didn't know he was gay when everyone and their dog knew it. It seems as if Viserys was doing everything to undermine Rhaenyra's position as heir. Why was she on dragonstone all the time. She could have alternated between attending small council meetings, cultivating better relationships with her allies, getting her own people on the meetings. Like these are normal politics, no dragons necessary. Shouldn't Viserys have taught her about these politics. Shouldn't she already suspect the Greens trying to usurp her. Alicent could hardly keep her mouth shut in front of the fat fool, surely she would create much more drama after his death. And why did the fat bitch Viserys "fall in live" ☠️ with green maid alicent. She was a servant of Jaehaerys and this dummy married her.

Answering your question now regarding Rhaenyra's actions, I think there's something the whole fandom would benefit from trying to understand, and here it goes: Nothing about Rhaenyra's affair seems the slight bit "producing an heir" driven, but much more a "I'm being forced to marry a man I do not love and I want a man to love me." driven.

And with good reason given how many freaking (straight enough to want to bang her) dudes were after her/courting her/fighting for her! And instead of getting to have her pick, she gets shipped of to one that she does not like, and that doesn't like her back.
Given how "The sons of Lord Tully of Riverrun, Lord Tyrell of Highgarden, Lord Oakheart of Old Oak, and Lord Tarly of Horn Hill paid court to the princess, as did the Hand's oldest son Harwin Strong. Breakbones, as he was called, was heir to Harrenhal, and said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms." (Fire and Blood, pg. 369)
Nowhere in text is it implied she was in a hurry to become a mother, or to have children with her new husband. Why should she? It's not like she had been married for 2 plus years and was worried about what people could think. Or worried about herself needing an heir. She was still very young, and she got pregnant not three months after she married, considering that she was wed in 114 AC and Jacaerys was born in late 114 AC.
If indeed Rhaenyra was the type of person who was willing to personally sacrifice for the good of the Realm - which she was not - then it would make sense for her to seek out a Valyrian looking man and to have children with him to pass them off as Laenor’s. Though I would argue that she doesn’t seem like the type of person who would do so because according to Septon Eustace:
“She was blood of the dragon, she reminded him, and meant for more than to live out her life as wife of a common sellsword.” (Fire and Blood, pg. 371)
Does the type of woman who would not want to marry a former knight of the Kingsguard because she would not think him high enough for her seems like the type of person, to any of you, who would bed and have children with a man who was not from noble blood?

Let’s just for a moment check out the pedigree of the two men Rhaenyra had sex/children with: Daemon Targaryen and Harwin Strong.
Daemon Targaryen - Targaryen prince. Blood of the Dragon like she was. Former King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea. Former Master of Laws and Master of Coin. Former Commander of the Gold Cloaks.
Harwin Strong - son to the King’s Hand Lyonel Strong. Heir to Harrenhal. Captain of the Gold Cloaks.
If anything, was she the type of person who would sacrifice her personal happiness to have valyrian looking children, I bet she would prefer to have them with Laenor Velaryon who was grandson to the former Prince of Dragonstone, once a contender for the Iron Throne, and heir to Driftmark and to one of the biggest fortunes in the Seven Kingdoms. Much more in line with the sort of man she seemed to engage in relationships with, wouldn’t you say?
But Rhaenyra was not this type of person was she? Rhaenyra again and again shows us she was a woman who wanted to follow her own feelings, and it took for Viserys to give her an ultimatum for her to accept marrying Laenor.
What does she do next? Try to make the marriage work? Pretend to have an actual marriage? No. What she does is to turn to Harwin Strong - a man who desired her and had previously courted her - having a very public affair, and not even bother to pretend she had consummated her marriage (to Laenor). Not even pretending that her and Laenor regularly slept together.
“Ser Laenor returned to Driftmark thereafter, leaving many to wonder if his marriage had ever been consummated.” (Fire and Blood, pg. 372)
Sure it has :) many times, just not between the bride and groom.
Even Septon Eustace who doesn't believe the "Velaryon" princes were Harwin's sons - sure Eustace - notes this:

Now, moving on, if I think politically speaking taking Harwin Strong as a lover was the right move for Rhaenyra? No, I do not.
Do I like it, however, that she did? That she as a 17 year old girl forced to marry a man she did not love, chose instead to be with a man she did love and told her father and his council to suck on it? YESS! Yes, I f_cking do! I stan anyone telling society to suck it when it comes to arranged marriages! I stan anyone - especially a woman - following her heart!
Good on her for banging Harwin as often as she did! Good for her for liking him! Good for her for having sex because she wanted to and not to make heirs or valyrian-looking heirs! This is one of the things I like about Rhaenyra, that she wasn’t an unfeeling “MuSt Do My Dutah!” robot and that she gave her father the middle finger.
Now, concerning the “Velaryon” princes appearance I sum it with this. Fool me once - Jace - shame on you. Fool me twice (and thrice) - Luke and Joffrey - shame on me. As I have said several times before, first time, she had no way of knowing, subsequent times... yeah... you should have told Harwin to pull out and used some moon tea, Rhaebae. Shame.

As for politics, Viserys did teach her, since she was a girl in fact. People forget that although during the Dance she wasn’t very good at it, Rhaenyra was taught how to rule from childhood. She began attending Small Council meetings when she was only eight.
The reasons, in my viewpoint, that made Viserys to keep Rhaenyra away from King’s Landing had much and more to do with the fact that he wanted to keep Rhaenyra and Alicent at a distance with each other. Let’s not forget he considered making Rhaenyra his Hand - made every freaking sense in the world - but he gave up the idea because of how Alicent and Rhaenyra hated each other. So he kept her at Dragonstone to avoid more conflict.
“Briefly he considered sending for Princess Rhaenyra. Who better to rule with him than the daughter he meant to succeed him on the Iron Throne? But that would have meant bringing the princess and her sons back to King’s Landing, where more conflict with the queen and her own brood would have been inevitable.” (Fire and Blood, pg. 384)
All in all, Walserys was all for keeping “peace and love”, or for having people pretending they didn’t hate each other’s guts 🙃
As for wtf made Rhaenyra, but especially Daemon, not suspect the Greens would stab them in the back? I have no freaking idea... Plot convenience? 🤷♀️ That is my guess idk, maybe they were just that confident? That secure about their places? Like a lot of things in F& this one is very poorly explain imo.
