What do Lao and Poppy think about Kanto?

Hmmmm good question!

I’m gonna assume Toph is on good terms with her parents now, they visit each other from time to time (either in Gaoling or Republic City). And then when did we say Toph and Kanto got together? Mid twenties? Maybe later.

I’m sure Lao and Poppy bugged Toph often with the “have you found someone? When are you going to settle down?” Questions that annoy her to no end. But even when she starts dating Kanto, I feel like she still wouldn’t tell them about him for a while.

After a year of dating or so, they probably decide it’s time to meet the parents and Kanto tries to be cool and slick, but he’s a mess he’s never met anyone’s parents like this before and he’s super awkward and a bit of a mess the first time they meet.

Lao doesn’t like Kanto right away. He’s smug and loud and a bit of a slob. Has no manners, and because of that Lao always demands that they sleep in separate rooms when they visit Gaoling (they always end up moving in the middle of the night tho lol). Poppy raises an eyebrow or two at the man, but Toph seems happy so she will not meddle too much. She asks Toph lots of questions about him though!

The baby news excites them, but they don’t love the fact that Toph and Kanto aren’t married. Still, they were never sure if Toph would have kids so the fact that she is having one makes them happy!

Lao is kind of always grumpy toward Kanto though, and after a few years, Kanto just rolls with it, sometimes even messes with Lao because he can!

After Lin is born, I feel like Kanto and Lao would have a conversation where he tells Lao he’s gonna ask Toph to marry him. He’s not asking for permission or a blessing, but more of a heads up. And I feel like that’s when Lao realizes how much Kanto loves and understands Toph, and that he is a really good man. So they have a nice bonding moment then.

They are actually really devastated when he dies, because he was a great man to their daughter and granddaughter.

Not too sure how they feel, but these are my initial ideas lol. Love to hear your thoughts on the matter if you have any!

I feel like Kanto got “Until death due us part” engraved in braille on his engagement ring for Toph

Keeping in mind that she didn’t discover the ring in his pocket until she was standing over his dead body

Oh hello angsty Kantoph thoughts. Welcome back!

So like, if there was a braille-like system in place, I can imagine Kanto encouraging her to learn some of it (I sometimes feel like she wouldn't care to learn), and maybe they learn together because they're that kind of couple lol.

And then she understands a bit of reading and then feels the phrasing on the ring and the only reason she decided to learn how to read was for him and now he's gone and she never tried to read ever again. That was the last phrase she read.
