I feel like Toph and Iroh get together for tea sometimes to discuss Zuko’s love life and how they’re gonna set him up with Katara

This is straight facts I don't think I will have it any other way.

You know they pulled some strings or at the very least gossiped about those two. Toph got the intel from Katara, Iroh got some from Zuko, and the two put their heads together to make the stars align and to get those two goons to open their eyes and see that they were head over heels in love with each other.

Iroh also brewed lovely tea and the company was spectacular, so it was a win-win-win.

This is Katara we’re talking about. If they didn’t respect her well then she would MAKE them respect her while Zuko cheered her on in the background.

and if anyone tries to challenge her to an Agni Kai, she would absolutely win and they would have to thank her for the honor of fighting her 😌

Why are Bryke so afraid of letting Toph be loved (well we know it’s because of the demonization of working woman and single motherhood but y’know)

this!! toph is tough and strong so...so she must not need to receive that much affection, right? she doesn't need to have any of her friends fondly reminiscing about all she got up to, she doesn't need a love interest to stay by her side, she doesn't need her kids to be talking about how much they miss and love her, no, absolutely not.

you know what she does need, though? after a childhood of being isolated from society? after they tell us in the show that she likes to show affection through touch? she needs to grow old and live in the Swamp, removed from her daughters and society in general, alone with her guilt and shame and memories.

Honestly, like, in general I don't like the idea that Zuko needs a replacement little sister (it's why I have such conflicting feelings about Kiyi in the comics, because she's adorable and I love her and her relationship with Zuko, but I hate everything she represents), because I think both Zuko and Azula deserved some post-canon focus on their relationship and on healing&rebuilding together rather than... whatever that mess was lmao, but if anyone in the gaang has something approaching a sibiling-like dynamic with Zuko, it's absolutely Toph, not Katara.

Do the steambabies go to regular school or do they have a private tutor?

Neither, but also both.

Pretty early on in their marriage, Katara converts a wing of the palace to a school for the kids of the palace staff. It’s open to anyone who works in the palace, whether a cook, maid, or council member.

No one expects the princes and princesses to attend, but as soon as the oldest is… whatever age they start school in ATLA, Katara and Zuko enroll them in classes.

All the kids are excited because their dad is a nerd so they are nerds they grew up with the kids of the palace workers, so they get to spend all day with their friends.

I imagine the curriculum is also flexible in that when visiting dignitaries come together for trade summits and what have you, their kids can join the palace classes (because it takes a while to get those on the same schedule as school breaks).

What do you think Toph would gain out of Taang? I’m just curious because most of the conversations I see surrounding the ship focus on what Aang would get out of it and very rarely what Toph would get out of it. I’m still on board with it I just wanna make sure it would actually be good for Toph.

That's a good question. I think most do that because one may argue that Aang's flaws are more noticeable than Toph's if that makes sense? Especially to those who 'side-ship' it... I guess the reason why most talk about what Aang gets in the relationship when he's with Toph doesn't really matter for this question though lol.

The way I see it, Aang gives her a lot of freedom to be who she wants unapologetically. Doesn't want to get married? Cool, Air Nomads don't really believe in marriage. Wants to change careers every now and again? Go for it! Being passionate about the things you do is important. Need to get away from the lily-livers of this town? Appa's saddle is packed and ready to go. Want to spar? Get ready for a beatdown, T (Just kidding, she almost never loses lol).

I think the biggest thing I've always thought about is that she was basically in this little box in Gaoling, not allowed to go anywhere or do anything. All of a sudden this weird, goofy kid tells her this crazy story about how they found her and from what she can tell, he's telling the truth. And as she gets to know him, she learns that he is willing to give her the freedom and ability to be her true self without judgment. So she takes the opportunity. Toph seems like a character that's always craving that freedom and adventure, and Aang is always there to give her that.

The other thing I see is that Aang doesn't have an issue giving jabs back or challenging her. Like, when they first have dinner together, she messes with him to shut him up, and he sneezes to get her to stop. I think they have different approaches for handling situations, and they seem like the couple to call each other out on it, but actually respect and listen to the other's opposing POV.

Aang is also extremely kind, caring, thoughtful, and wears his heart on his sleeve. For someone that closes her emotions off to people, I feel like Aang would encourage Toph to have her feelings show, but he would also give her the outwardly love and affection for the real Toph Beifong that she didn't really receive growing up, if that makes sense.

Toph would also be with someone who's values and beliefs and traditions contradict hers. So she gets to learn more about the benefits of peace and tranquility in life, forgiveness, passive approaches, openness, and simple lifestyles. Aang never forces her to be any of these things (I think he knows he can't force Toph to do anything she doesn't want to do), but he shows the positives of the Air Nomad ways and she learns more about his way of life. And Toph would know how passionate he is about his culture and traditions, and she would give him her undivided attention when he speaks about it, maybe even learn a thing or two.

But I think the main benefit I see with Toph being with Aang is that he complements her well and 'fills in the gaps' of their relationship. Obviously she doesn't have to be with anyone, but when she chooses to be with Aang, he's understanding when she's stubborn, he's kind when she ruffles people's feathers, he shows all of his emotions when she might be guarded. None of their qualities are bad when they're alone, but when they're together, they really do balance each other out in the best way, and I think they respect each other a ton to know that it's okay that they have different personalities. They can still love each other unconditionally.
