LM5 First Listening/Review
Opinions are based on first listen and may change. This is the system I use to rank songs: 5 (love a lot), 4.5 (love), 4 (like a lot), 3.5 (like), 3 (indifferent), 2.5 (dislike), 2 (hate), 1 (unlistenable).
1. The National Manthem: A stunning empowering album opener that effortlessly blends into Woman Like Me and sets the tone for the album. I love to hear Little Mix’s vocals and harmonies here which I think is their main strength as a group. Although I don’t rate intros or outros due to their lack of content I love this one! (unrated)
2. Woman Like Me: In my opinion, this is one the best singles from Little Mix to date. You can really hear (and see) their maturity yet it’s still the fun, poppy sound you expect from a girl group. To be honest, I wasn’t so sure about it when it was first released because of it’s similarities to other songs but I found myself coming back to it. (4.5/5)
3. Think About Us: If I was to define Little Mix’s essential sound I would use this song as an example. The tropical dance beat combined with thought-provoking lyrics sounds like what they were going for on Glory Days and I love it. Sure the chorus may be a bit repetitive but I think that’s what makes it addicting. (5/5)
4. Strip: THAT ACCAPELLA INTRO WITH THE HEELS IN THE BACKGROUND I’M DEAD. No but seriously I love the whole message and beat of this song. I love that they have Sharaya J on this because she deserves much more attention. (4.5/5)
5. Monster In Me: This is much more my style. I love an emotional ballad and the girls never disappoint. The lyrics are beautiful and their vocals are flawless as usual. I’m curious as to how this song will sound live. (5/5)
6. Joan of Arc: When this first came out I was debating whether I liked it or not. After religiously listening to it for the last week, I can firmly say that well it’s not my fave it’s still a bop. (3.5/5)
7. Love a Girl Right: When I heard that Little Mix was going to rework Thong Song I knew this would be bomb and I was right. The guitars, the harmonies, the sass I’m living! (4.5/5)
8. American Boy: I heard a lot of fans really loving this and she’s a cute girl but not something I will go out of my way to listen to. I can definitely see this being on the radio and maybe having American in it will get them to STOP SLEEPING ON LITTLE MIX. (4/5)
9. Told You So: UGH THIS SONG MAKES ME CRY. I could write an essay on how much I love it. The calming guitars and the lyrics about girls comforting each other after a breakup just melt my heart. It gives me the same feeling that Lady Gaga’s Grigio Girls does meaning that it makes me wish I had friends oops. (5/5)
10. Wasabi: LITTLE MIX SNAPPED OMG I’m obsessed with this song it reminds me of something that Britney would have released on In the Zone or Blackout (aka her best albums) and those guitars at 0:51 just put me in the ground. One of my faves for sure (5/5)
11. More Than Words: The production and vocals on this are gorgeous but I find myself getting a little bored listening to it. Perhaps it will grow on me. (4/5)
12. Motivate: Oooh yes I’m feeling this! It’s the kind of sexy anthem that I love from Little Mix but done in a more mature way than they have done in the past. (5/5)
13. Notice: Giving me those Fifty Shades vibes. It has the dark, dramatic instrumental that I love so much and I will definitely have this on repeat. (5/5)
14. The Cure: I can really relate to this song and I just love the lyrics. The bridge gives me chills and it’s a song I really need right now so thank you Little Mix (5/5)
15. Forget You Not: A solid bop but compared to the other songs on this album it doesn’t do anything for me. (3.5/5)
16. Woman’s Worth: A beautiful closure to a beautiful album. It ties the feminism and empowerment message the album brings perfectly together. I love it and those harmonies and ad libs at the end go off queens (4.5/5)
I didn’t feel the need to review The Cure (Stripped) or Only You
Overall: Little Mix could sing anything and I’ll think it’s the greatest thing that’s happened to music. No, but seriously this is my favorite album from the girls and they really just get better and better. I’m honestly surprised because I didn’t think they would ever top Salute as my favorite album just because of the memories I have with it but this goes above and beyond. It really shows how strong their chemistry is as a group and people might disagree but I think they are one of the top girl groups maybe ever.
Score: 4.5/5
