Someone posted in a UK sub about the whole remembrance thing, being silent and poppy's, like asking who did it and stuff, why and why not. And the absolute drivel in the replies. Just people saying they pulled over in their vans to stop driving and cried, or shaming others for not stopping working 🙄 It really is a dick measuring contest about who feels the saddest about it. This was my response to it, that won't be popular but it's my honest thoughts:
I am so tired of this stuff.
People are shamed, guilt tripped, and forced into doing this whole public charade, if it was a personal choice for people to do, fine, but it never is. And people are always like "Lest we forget" and there's that stupid poem about a mother and child. But how can people forget when it is dragged on and forced down your throat every single year.
Thing is, what happened was horrible, it shouldn't happen again, we should honour and respect the dead. But nobody upholds those values. Instead people just wanna make a song and dance about who can show off the most about being flashy with their remembrance, and shaming others for not doing it in the way they like. Also, it's been so many years since then. We don't hold annual events for so many other wars. Nobody wants to stop wars currently going on. Racists are rampant. Soon there will be a generation with no direct tie to it. How much longer are we gonna force this on society and subject people to it.
We can honour, remember, and respect things, without this annual somber parade where people are forced and shamed into going silent and wearing poppy's. I am tired of how people treat this and how they treat others. And again, I just wonder how long this will drag on. People need to move on eventually. And that's okay. Moving on isn't forgetting. Moving on isn't repeating things. Moving on isn't being disrespectful or dishonouring people. Moving on is a natural process for so many things in life. People constantly grieve and act in their own ways. And it is quite normal to only mourn what is directly tied to your life. So how much longer is this gonna go on? How much longer are people gonna force and shame people into forced acts, yet somehow not be the bad guys?
I grew tired of this many years ago, and i grow more and more tired of it every year. It would be fine if people just did what they want and respected how other people act. But no. If you don't perform in the way that society wants you to perform, you're a bad guy. As an atheist, praying does nothing for me or for the dead. Wearing a poppy and being silent for 2 minutes does nothing for me or the dead either.
