How did Poppytail get the suffix -tail? It doesn’t seem like a skill that would be shown off in matriarch training. To be fair the only frame of reference I have is Thunderclan’s training

Doyalist Answer: She got -tail so we could keep her name closer to her canon name, Tallpoppy. Tall-, -tail, you get it.

Watsonian Answer: She wasn't immediately chosen as matriarch material, and got to demonstrate her agility as an apprentice when scavenging in the Aulmir. By the time she switched over to her new mentor, her skills were clear enough that she qualified for -tail. She still feels a little weird about being a matriarch without the -flower suffix, but at least she's not the only one, with Aspencloud around.

I love the addition of the Matriarchs! I’ve grown emotionally attached to this role and the cats who’ve filled it. From left to right the cats are:

Adults- Goldenflower, Morningflower, Duckflower, Poppytail

Kits- Gorsekit, Cinderkit, Badgerkit, Rookkit

Now that this chapter is public, I can finally share the headcanon I got when I first read this chapter on patreon: Poppytail and Aspencloud become best friends in arc 2 (you've said before the clans ARE making the great journey, or at least are leaving the forest) as the only 2 matriarchs to not be named -flower.

This is...actually a super fun idea. I may keep that in mind for later.

So did Poppytail register Sootkit as something unusual (since a solid red molly wouldn’t produce a solid black kit, and the characters seem to consider Russetfur ginger based on the allegiances?) Related: would ShadowClan’s seers (as the most superstitious clan) consider an ‘impossibly’ colored kit (especially one born to someone as high-ranking as Russetfur) an omen of some sort?

He was a weird one for her, and a subconscious reminder that she is not a matriarch with the highest experience and knowledge, because surely there was a reasonable explanation that she didn't have on lock in her mind. She eventually waved it off as maybe Russetfur having some black spot somewhere they couldn't see easily, and they all left it there for everyone's peace of mind.

As for the second question: I could absolutely imagine a seer declaring that this kitten is going to be important in some massive way, not that they could say exactly what that is. Pure white kits are almost always considered unfortunate, especially if they're the only one in their litter, but those at least can be explained by their parents having some white on them. A kitten whose colors shouldn't be? That's more interesting than scary.
