The image of a Vodou priest in the popular imagination is one of a malevolent, sinister being that is always engaged in subversive acts as 're-imagined' by Colonialism, yet nothing could be further from the reality. The oaths and challenges undertaken during their initiation is to encourage upholding a moral and social order, a microcosm of the balance and harmony in the Cosmic order, its correlative macrocosm. Sadly, due to historical laws of discrimination and lack of recognition of their status and craft, many have to go against their training and instead use their craft to make basic ends meet and uphold their families. And 'bizarrely' the clients who consult them to carry out such revengeful and spiteful acts are usually Christians and Muslims, who deride the traditions in the day yet consult it at night as they acknowledge its Natural Power. All they know about Vodou is that its used for 'evil stuff' - stuff no genuine spiritual practitioner will ever undertake as we are too conversant with mainstay principle in Vodou - the law of reciprocity; the energy given out, returns to source.
