New Bagginshield Podfics!
Bilbo Finds His Craft and When Dwarves Go A-Courting by porphyrios
I've finally finished the last touches on podfics of two of my favorite short stories! I began recording these nearly a year ago, so it's incredibly satisfying to finally share them with the world! Deepest thanks to @porphyriosao3 for the amazing stories, and to @lesbian-aunt for her thoughtful and detailed feedback that helped me polish them to perfection!

A note about my Khuzdul pronunciation: I recorded this before I began The Dwarrow Scholar's intensive courses on Neo-Khuzdul, which includes quite a lot of specific instruction on pronunciation. At the time I was developing a headcanon that Ereborean Dwarrow have an accent distinct from other regions (they have a number of distinct words and runes as well), that softens many sounds, somewhat comparable to the way Castilian Spanish softens some sounds as compared to other dialects. Anyway, I kind of overdid it, but I liked the effect and was unable to rerecord the lines without a distinct change in audio quality, so they remain 🤷🏼♀️ I hope it's not too distracting! My future podfics will hopefully include a lot more Khuzdul that's much closer to The Dwarrow Scholar's vision.
I get that preservation techniques weren't all that advanced in 565, but it makes me so angry that nobody thought to preserve one of Porphyrios's bones or something for posterity. These fucking people preserved the knucklebones of Saint Nobody the Unremarkable, but when an honest-to-goodness sea monster washes up on shore, these gormless rubes eat it like it's a Dutch prime minister.
Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 2 — Porphyrios
During the 6th century, the waters around Constantinople were home to a 45ft whale that was notorious for attacking and sinking merchant ships, fishing vessels, and even ships belonging to the Roman navy.
Sailors who encountered the whale named him Porphyrios. The exact translation of this name is not certain but some believe it may have referred to the purple color of the whale—so something like "Purple Boy."
Locals feared the whale but were also fascinated by him. Some accounts describe boats of people that would go out hoping to catch a glimpse of Porphyrios even though they ran the risk of being attacked themselves.
Porphyrios' fifty year reign of terror came to an end when he accidentally beached himself while chasing a pod of dolphins near the mouth of the Sakarya River. Locals quickly fell on the whale, brutally killing him and feasting on his remains.
No one is entirely certain what type of whale Porphyrios was. A wayward sperm whale is most likely though some theorize he was an orca. Or perhaps he was some more ancient whale species or one still unknown to science.
The Christian is noble. Let us prefer to be wronged.
If goodness and love come into us, we forget the evil that others have done to us. The secret is hidden here. When evil comes from afar, you cannot avoid it. The great skill, however, is to despise it. With the grace of God, even though you will see evil, it will not influence you, for you will be full of grace.
-excerpt from the life and words of Elder Porphyrios
The dolphins of Knossus are an aesthetic that has stayed with me for a long time and something I turned into a fakemon long ago. Fast forward to earlier this year and I decided it could link to the legend of Porphyrios, a whale that terrorised the Byzantine coast. Delphaic are swift ocean predators whose playful nature can get them into trouble as they wantonly push boundaries. Typically found in shallow coastal waters, they often come into contact with people. With a hide composed of a mosaic of tough scales, they are surprisingly sturdy without compromising agility. Porphyraic are aggressive pokemon that eagerly attack seagoing vessels. Their powerful physique and large size make them dangerous enough but they retain a level of agility seen in their smaller counterparts. Striking out of the blue, they relentlessly overwhelm targets and will quickly move onto the next once their work is done. — Ability Info — — Attack Info —
