Michelangelo's "Portal Study" isn't a finished artwork. It's a page of ideas. Pencil construction lines remain visible beneath the brown wash showing how he worked through the design step by step. Today the drawing is kept at the Casa Buonarroti in Florence. More than five centuries later it reminds us that some of the most important works in art begin as simple sketches.
