Michelangelo's "Portal Study" isn't a finished artwork. It's a page of ideas. Pencil construction lines remain visible beneath the brown wash showing how he worked through the design step by step. Today the drawing is kept at the Casa Buonarroti in Florence. More than five centuries later it reminds us that some of the most important works in art begin as simple sketches. Calling any Renaissance studies people here!
Do any of y’all have any recommendations for academic books and/or articles about patronage of the arts in Mantua, Venice, and/or Rome (c. 1500-1650)? I’ll also take anything that discusses sociopolitical organization in those places, or anything about how the aristocracy/monied classes operated since I think I can work that in.
Currently studying for my MA exam and having a bit of trouble with gathering sources to study for this topic since it’s a bit out of my wheelhouse.

Know Your Minor: Renaissance Studies
Renaissance Studies is a new minor that explores the Renaissance world using approaches from across humanities and social sciences. Students can explore the era with perspectives from Political Science, Art History, Religious Studies, History and Philosophy of Science, or a wide variety of other disciplines. Courses include Renaissance and Baroque Fairytales and Their Modern Rewritings, Martial Arts Culture in the Spanish Golden Age, and History of Western Music: Hildegard to Handel.
