The Hellmouth Oath (Adam-Headcanon: its not a cult honest)
Adam is from an alliance of Hunter families who’re convinced that Hellmouths/areas of dimensional instability represent an existential threat to humanity. While possibly having its original roots in eschatological fervor, over time Adam’s family modernized and mixed conventional military tactics with Hunter traditions.
The reason why Adam sometimes acts and sounds like an apocalypse prepper is because...well...he is. He was taught that his life purpose is to protect humanity, especially by keeping watch over Hellmouths and giving his life to prevent them from unleashing lovecraftian doomsday on humanity.
It’s part of my headcanon as to why Adam is a generalist Hunter, because for who knows how many generations his ancestors have camped out near hellmouths across the world and trained their children to be soldiers ready to protect the civilian community and fight off the alien apocalypse. Nothing else matters.
Are they right? Who knows. But while this perspective lends itself to a grim sort of pragmatism (eliminating nonhumans matters way less then assuring human survival by any means necessary, even evil means) it also gives a bleak and conspiratorial outlook, where civilization’s survival is just borrowed time bought through sacrifice.
why did none of you warn me how hard The Haunting of Hill House slaps like it’s been 5 years and this finale made me feel like I was finally watching the director of Oculus at work again
